Quarantine Question
I'm bring home a mitred conure tomorrow and I have a budgie; Buddy's cage is in the living room fairly close to the french doors going into the sitting room and around the corner of the french doors is Baxter (Maestos?) cage. How do I quarantine a new bird. Buddy was doing this sneezy thing for awhile and seem to clear himself out and there looked like something white on his perch; does that mean anything?
Thanks for your help.

Ideally, they should not share the same airspace, but that is rather difficult to do.
I always handled my "safe" bird first, then the new bird after, then dealt with the baby, took my shower, etc...before even going back to my first bird. However, with the sneezing and stuff going on, I'd see if it were possible to hold of on bringing the conure home, until you can get the other birdie to an avian vet for a check up. I quarantined for 30 days, some people do it longer, but 30 days is the bare minimum. Remember too, when washing food/water bowls, you should not even use the same water, sponge or anything. Things they come in contact with should be kept seperate as much as possible. |
