There are a few rust spots on this cage and I researched this topic on this site and found a little information but I am worried about what to do. OK I get that rust is toxic for birds, so can I sand the rust off and call it good or does it have to be painted? This is a cage I found on ebay for cheap and at the moment I can not afford to buy another cage because I am saving to bring my baby CAG home in november. So this could be a temporary home for him if necessary. I am not worried about how the cage looks but only about the safety of the cage for my baby. Any input??!
Thanks, Jennifer |

I should say that the rust spots are not deep. It is where the former bird resident must have chipped the paint off and then the people we bought it from had it outside for a short time. So the rust is not deep or severe. Sorry to make this so lengthy and keep thinking of things to add. Just a nervous mom!

I was told by King's Cages that Krylon is safe as long as it has dried and there is no odor. There was a discussion on this topic not to long ago and for the life of me, I cannot find it, but the general discussion was not to use paint. I must admit, I purchased a cage for my boyfriend's macaw when she would come to visit at my house and painted the entire cage with Krylon. I never had a problem. However, see what everyone else says. The folks at King's said they researched it and it was okay, but I do not know how much expertise they have. It did work for me for short visits - and that may be the key - short visits.

if your birds are cage chewers what I found out earlier this year is that no paint is safe. If your birds don't chew the bars then Krylon is ok. The problem they told me was that all pigments use metal. That was from a conversation with a rep from Krylon.

Perhaps you could try sanding the rust off and then applying some type of wax to help keep it from rusting so quickly? Make sure you find out whether the wax is safe first though.
