Trip to Gabriel Foundation

I just got back from a weekend trip to Colorado, where I got to spend 2 days at the foundation :-) On Thur I gave spray baths - which is so much fun!!! I think it is hilarious how some birds sit at the bottom of their cage and sulk, while others just go nuts with happy flappin! Luckily, my foster birdie, a male Molluccan, loved his bath. I went back on Sunday just to play and visit with Julie a bit. There seems to be a lot of birds that are being rescued from hoarding situations right now. I feel really bad for those guys - many of them are the big macaws, which are my favorite. I want to take them all home wiht me!!! If you go, visit the very cute lesser sulfer crested girl name Zoe. When you take her out of her cage she asks 'where we goin'?' Noah, the blue and gold is cute too - watch how she waves her foot! And Julie has a new baby - a blue baby amazon. He has some deformities from inbreeding, but he is just a doll and is learning to step up.

I still haven't visited the aviary. What is WRONG with me??????!!! After the holidays, I guess....

But my good news is that my adoption application has been accepted. I took the class and had the home visit on Tuesday. I get to pick up my new birdies (six gorgeous cinnamon and cinnamon pied cockatiels -- 3 boys and 3 girls) at their retail store, Birdbrain, in downtown Denver on Thursday!

What a process! It took two months.

Unhappy sorry we missed you

Sorry I missed you, hon. but I'm glad to have at least caught you on the phone - the birds probably loved their showers. Winter sets in in these parts and showers become a bit more haphazard, given the temperatures. Ira and I will make a point of coming down to see you next time you're in town to volunteer. He's got at least three new tail feathers coming in and some of the stress banded feathers are being molted out. By spring and the new molt he should be nice and glossy He has the sassy part down cold.

Birdlady - congrats on your 6 biards!! I think it would be fun for you to see where they are housed down there.. It's quite a fun room and you'll like the flight aviaries for the smaller birds. Are these birds from last year's hoarding situation? Take care, Kari

No, these cockatiels did not come from a hoarding situation, according to Julie Murad. The couple was going through a nasty divorce and his elderly parents moved in with him. He could no longer give them the care and attention they deserved.

HOWEVER, they've been on an all-seed diet for their entire lives. So that's going to be fun. Yikes. I think most of them are related because the band numbers are similar. But that's okay because I wasn't planning on breeding.

They're all cinnamons, with four being pieds and one a pearl pied. The smallest is 84 grams and the largest is about 105 grams. (I wonder what they'll weigh when they stop receiving sunflower seeds!)
