Bird Mart Today

Hello, I guess these Bird Marts get alot of BAD rap from bird people, As a newbie I Don't yet understand why, But I am learning fast! I really enjoy going and just seeing all these different species in 1 place, I recognize most all of the vendors that sell there, They seem to travel around with the Show,
I don't see too many good deals on toys & goodies, But I do see good prices on birds. But Any way check this out, Today this lady had a 3 month old Hyacinth, 1st one I have ever had the priveledge of seeing in person,
She was explaining how she was a breeder for these beauties, and how she was making a show special for this one at $8500, Well thats all fine and all, but This bird had what I call a crooked beak, The top beak bent to one side, and did not line up right with the Bottom. When I was shopping for my B & G
I ran across one with this beak problem, She told me it was a birth defect
and therefore would have to sell the bird for MUCH less money perhaps even 400-500 $, Maybe this lady at the Show today just figured no body would notice???

Any way Had a decent visit and spent less than $20

Maybe hear some feedback on other folks thoughts on Bird marts

Dave

That's kinda sad about the Hy's beak. I'm hoping that who ever invests in the bird will realize that his beak with have to be checked, and trimmed regularly by a trained avian vet in order to keep it where it can eat properly.
We have Bird Fairs here that I frequent for supplies. I buy my Zupreem in 20# bags and the prices are much better at Bird Fairs than Pet Stores. We are hoping to go to the one in Valdosta GA on Sept 2nd. It all depends on how hubby is feeling. He doesn't ride so well and its about 2 1/2 hour drive. We will just have to see.

Hyacinths can go for as much as 12k ea, and as far as bent beaks, I've heard that occasionally happens when handfeeding, and that it doesn't correct itself once it happens... so I guess $8.5k would be "okay". Of course, then again I would wonder if it would be fully weaned at 3 months old??? Considering how some of the larger birds can take 4-6 months to fully wean (or at least be abundant weaned?).
