My mailman gave his bird tylenol
Does anyone know what effect a drop of baby tylenol would have on a bird? I told him he shouldn't have done that but I didn't come right out and tell him to take the bird to the vet, and I could just kick myself. He had the best of intentions and loves his little bird, but I'm afrai he's going to love it to death.

I think he figured if it was child safe, it was safe for his bird. I know that giving any aspirin is very bad for dogs and birds. I assume that the bird was in pain for some reason and he was trying to make it more comfortable.
When Eenie was stung last week, I was told by my vet that I could safely give her children's Benadryl to help with the pain and swelling. However, Benadryl (diphenhydramine) isn't acetaminophen (Tylenol). And aspirin (salicylic acid) isn't recommended for MOST pets. Add to that how small a tiel is and I would think that could easily harm a bird. However, I'm not a vet.

My mailman is really hard to understand but I understand that something happened to its foot. He said that the bird can walk around fine but he was afraid it might be in pain. I'm going to the vet tomorrow anyway and I'll ask him about it. It says on my bottle of tylenol that it shouldn't be taken by people with liver problems, and a bird's little liver is very sensitive, but I'm not a vet either.

Gary:
He used Tylenol, not aspirin. The aren't the same meds.

I can find no reference to Tylenol even being used for birds only asprin. neither one should be given to any animal or bird without advice from a vet or avian vet. The point I'm trying to make. one has to know the dosage of any medication and be prepared to handle the meds reaction should there be one. Like you said, just because it is listed as child safe, does not make the medication pet safe. The mailman probably had great intentions of reducing the foot pain for the bird but did not ponder the results should something go wrong. |
