Illigers Macaw

Ok, this is the last one for a while here.... I think this one turned out the best so far, I used a slightly different technique on him, took more time, but is far more detailed-

8" x 10". On Bristol Smooth-

And, since the details are lost in the scans, a closeup-

I won't be doing any more for at leasst a few days, I am due off my ship in 2 days and have some 'real' work to do here, then I will be traveling...

Of course, any comments welcome :)

Andrew,

Another outstanding sketch. The detail is perfect and you have captured the personality of the bird. I can even hear the bird (Jabber) saying "peak-a-bird" as he is lifting his foot up.

Very nice, as always. May I make one small suggestion? I hate to seem petty, but I see a common thread and I therefore think you simply aren't noticing. In the macaw sketches, each of the tails seem slightly short. Not a lot, but noticeably. Perhaps because I have so many here I'm more aware of it, but take another look.If I had a compass handy, I'd measure. I have a habit of doing that with torsos when I sketch humans. I tend to make them slightly short and that makes the humans seem leggier. Maybe its just my observation and groundless. Other than that, you do amazing work. I can tell that you love birds and have them. It shows.

Thanks.

Outlaw- Good observation! This was a guess, the reference photo was cut off just below the perch, so I had to make everything below up. I thought the tail was a tad on the short side, but it worked well into the composition (keeping it within the 10" I had to work with), and 90% of people would never notice...But, it is on the short side for sure...

I'm glad you weren't offended. You do such great work and I don't want you to think that I only noticed the one fault. Frankly, its a gorgeous picture. Most of the macaws have tails longer than their bodies. The scarlets have the longest tails of all.

Andrew,

I did not even notice the tail until Nancy mentioned it. My wife and I were focusing on how you captured the personality of the bird. Everyone would have to see the bird in person to fully understand what your picture brings out.

For guessing at the tail you did an outstanding job!

Nice detailed work. I liked it. Drawing is hard work. I used to myself.
If I had more time I'd get back into it.
