Please save the baby tiel ASAP!

Our tiels have 1 chick born 3 days ago. I didnt realize there was an egg in the box that i hadnt removed from an unsuccessful attempt once before. One of the parents stepped on it and it reeks! I am afraid for the chick. What should I do to remove the egg and danger of disease? Thank you

I would wait until the parents were out of the box feeding and (being prepared ahead of time) have a quick way to block them out of the box. Have all supplies ready. If you have shavings in the box - have some fresh available. Make sure you have enough before you start. Have a WARM soft container to set the chick in. When the parents are out/quickley block them out, remove the nest box gently if possible. Remove the chick and place him in the warm place gently. Dump the box and add new shavings. Pack them down and replace the box and then the baby and open it to the parents. They will be upset but should come in and warm the baby. If at all possible and the box isnt a huge mess then I willl just lift the chick with one hand and scoop out the yuk with a rubber gloved other hand, add a handfull of fresh shavings and replace the baby. This is how I handle the situation. without ever putting the baby down. BE CAREFUL, a three day old chick is fragile. If you try to force the parents out they might accidently hurt it. Maybe you can lure them out with a special treat.

Great advice. Sometimes by just gently tapping on the side of the closed nestbox, the parents will leave. Then you can do what you have to do, as suggested by huntress.
