Macademia nut warning

Please pass this on to bird club members.

When I went to pick up Malachite from the vet (she was having her bandage
changed) there was a distressed woman seated in the waiting room. She was
calling her family and holding a dog. The vet techs were popping in and out
of the room to talk to her. It was clear there was an emergency.

The woman told me that her (other) dog was the emergency. He had eaten
macadamia nuts, and it turns out they are poisonous to dogs. (Apparently
the dog had knocked something over to get the nuts; she was not home at the
time of the accident.) The woman didn't know macadamias were bad for dogs
until she called Poison Control. I called my brother to mention this to him
and he hadn't heard of it either. I did a Google search and found this
link.

Folks who have both big birds and dogs should make sure that IF their birds
get macadamia nuts, the dogs do NOT pick up the nut scraps.

Thanks for the warning! I don't have a dog, but I think I will place a sign at the store in front of the mac nuts that they are poisonous to dogs. Wow. Hope the dog will be okay.

I just read thru the report. I would love to know how the vet knew to check for Mac Poisoning in this sick dog above. When the birds are perched and I put the nuts on the perch ( something I will never do again now, Thanks! ) .. the mastiff plays under the perch hoping for the birds to drop some fruit or nuts .. If the dogs became ill and I went to the vet, no way would I have thought , O Mac Nuts and Im sure the vet wouldnt have asked.

This is a great lesson to learn, Im so sorry thou that a dog is sick. thanks again for the heads up on this .

One of the big problems/worries with this is the symptoms are often not noticed until the dog cannot stand or walk - people assume the dog has had a "stroke" or has been paralyzed and they may choose to euthanize the dog, when in reality it could be from the nuts. Vets should know to always ask about possible comsumption in cases or sudden paralysis, inability to stand.

Another common food in many bird homes are grapes and raisins. They are extremely toxic to dogs and unlike the macademia nuts, the symtoms do not resolve, rather consumption puts the dog into acute renal failure. This tragically happened with my beloved dog Poppy last summer, after she had ate grapes (which I had purchased for the birds but had gotten forgotten in the fridge and so threw out) from the trash. Sadly, I did not know at the time she had done so until symptoms developed and also she spent a week and a half on kidney dialysis, she did not make it.

My uncle spent 2 grand on his dog cause she ate peanuts. Those are poison to dogs as well. The vet said dogs can't digest nuts like we can. Crystal
