scary experience today

i took bailey to get his nails and wings trimmed. the nails were cut too short.about 2 hrs. after i got home his toe started bleeding (alot) to me anyway. i put cornstarch, flour, rubbed soap on it, put pressure on it. it stopped for awhile but then started bleeding again. i went to the drug store and got a styptic stick and put some on. so far it's not bleeding anymore.
the person who cut his nails said for me to watch the back two toes. i thot they might bleed on the way home not later. i will be sleeping near his cage tonite. i put white paper towels under his perch and keep checking for more bleeding. hope he'll be okay. i might be over-reacting a bit but want to make sure he's okay. he was such a good fid today!

It sounds to me like he will be just fine. It's good that the styptic stick worked (you can buy gel as well). My amazon used to bleed occasionally, but it was never anything serious -- more upsetting to me than him, I'm sure!

i'm not sure what they cut his nails with. baileys toe nail did start bleeding a little bit again tonite a couple of hours ago. i went to the drug store and bought a styptic stick. after applying it to his toe nail i covered his cage and put him to bed for the nite. i keep checking but so far no blood on the white paper towels under his perch. i will be sleeping out where his cage is tonite and keep checking. i think, maybe because he kept playing and moving around it caused the toe to keep bleeding.(typical caique behavior) hopefully, him being still and sleeping will give it time to heal. this was such a scary experience. i learned alot through it though. 1. definetly have an emergency kit (plan) and 2. have a phone number ready for a vet. if it wasn't for forums like these i would've been lost..thank you everyone!

Always keep styptic powder or stick on hand. Always. Its also good to have on hand for blood feather and BROKEN nails accidents. I dont like the gel - its kind of a pain. The powder lasts forever and is a very handy inexpensive emergency item. Even if you dont trim nails yourself.
