Cage sizes

Someone told me that the cages I have for the fids are to large. They said they don't need this much room. What kinda crud is that? I was always told get the biggest you can afford. Just watch the bar spacing.

BONITA'S HOUSE (Sun Conure): 32 long x 23 wide x 40 high (thats from the cage floor to the top of the cage. That doesn't include the drop pan, legs & wheels. The fid isn't in that area.)

ROMEO'S HOUSE (Severe Macaw): 40 long x 30 wide x 47 high (thats from the cage floor to the top of the cage. That doesn't include the drop pan, legs & wheels. The fid isn't in that area.)

Romeo did have a play gym on the top of his which made it over 6ft high but I took it off to put the Full Spec Light on there. Crystal

IMO, you can never put a parrot in too large of a cage. My tiel is in a cage that is 32' tall x 23' wide x 40' tall. This gives him plenty of room to flap his wings and get exercise.

Ollie's cage is about the same size as my tiels'. Many people say that greys are the exception to "the bigger the better" in regards to cage size. However, Ollie is not a typical grey at all, and her next cage will be much bigger.

I would say the cage sizes you have are just right!

as long as the bar spacing is good then the bigger the better. would we humans want to live in a 10 X 10 house? we dont need more room than that, do we?

How can you have a too big of cage when they fly around outside??? Unless of course the birds cage IS your house!!! AND on top of that you have to sleep outside!!!

Noel and Casey have a gym that is approx 9'x2', and 7' high..... However, it's not closed off from my room in any way, as it sits right where the closet in the room used to be.... And Casey frequently flies around the room to visit the other birds!

The other birds live in a small black 18 x 18 cage (2 bourkes), as well as two larger cages that are posted in the cage section... Five tiels in the silver cage, and 3 budgies in the white cage currently.

Do you have a list of what your cage requirement sizes are?

Crystal, can I ask who told you that? My sister in-law informed me the other day that I had too many toys in my tiel cage, tiel's don't even play with toys! ROLFLMAO. This from a girl who despises every pet in the world and has never cared for a bird in her life.

No, not too big at all.

Our TAG is in a 30*40*50ish interior (6 ft counting play top) and she loves it. It has absolutely NO ill effects on her what so ever.

Our goffin, hybrid 'too (goffin*citron) are both also in the same size and they also love them. Took a while to work our hybrid up to that size, but she's a recovering phobic, so she's a bit different.

Our citron is in one that's 40*57*6ft and he also has no issues caused by cage size.

I've heard that a cage that is "too big" may make a bird feel insecure - like they can't guard all of their home turf, but in our experience that generally isn't true. If it were, why would aviaries be so popular and considered so beneficial?

Yes I have, I'll translate it to english so you understand better.

You meshure the birds lenght from the tip of the beak to the end of the tailfeathers, if the bird has lost it's tailfeathers you imagine that they where there.

Birds length: up to 15cm
Minimum area: 0,31 kvm
Minimum area/bird if you hold several birds in the same cage: 0,03 kvm
Minimum lenght: 0,7m
Minimum depth: 0,45m
Minimum hight: 0,6m

Birds length: 16-20cm (for exemple budgies, agapornis)
Minimum area: 0,31 kvm
Minimum area/bird if you hold several birds in the same cage: 0,04 kvm
Minimum lenght: 0,7m
Minimum depth: 0,45m
Minimum hight: 0,6m

Birds length: 21-25cm
Minimum area: 0,45 kvm
Minimum area/bird if you hold several birds in the same cage: 0,055kvm
Minimum lenght: 0,9m
Minimum depth: twice the birds lenght (minimum 0,45m)
Minimum hight: 0,6m

Birds length: 26-35cm (for example cockatiels)
Minimum area: 0,84 kvm
Minimum area/bird if you hold several birds in the same cage: 0,1 kvm
Minimum lenght: 1,2m
Minimum depth: twice the birds lenght
Minimum hight: 0,8m

Birds length: 36-45cm
Minimum area: 1,44 kvm
Minimum area/bird if you hold several birds in the same cage: 0,6 kvm
Minimum lenght: 1,6m
Minimum depth: twice the birds lenght
Minimum hight: 1,0m

Birds length: 45-55cm (for example Severe macaws)
Minimum area: 2,2 kvm
Minimum area/bird if you hold several birds in the same cage: 1,0 kvm
Minimum lenght: 2,0m
Minimum depth: twice the birds lenght
Minimum hight: 1,2m

Birds length: 56-65cm
Minimum area: 3,12 kvm
Minimum area/bird if you hold several birds in the same cage: 1,5 kvm

Wow, I never imagined a cage could be too big unless the bar spacing was wide enough for the bird to get stuck or escape. My ekkie is in a macaw cage and my conure is in the ekkie's old cage--which was the "appropriate" size for an ekkie. They both seem perfectly happy and content. Actually the ekkie has become less territorial and the conure screams less. I think it's because they have more space to exercise their wings, and I'm able to put a bigger variety of toys in there for them.
