Travel Cage/Carrier for XL Macaw?

Hello Everyone!

My husband and I take our Green Wing Macaw back and forth to work with us every day. Right now he rides on our shoulder which I know isn't safe (and I don't like it).

I am looking for some kind of travel cage/carrier to use but most of what I find (like the Wingabago) is too small.

What do you all use? Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Phil & Deirdre

I use a large dog travel crate for Chief. You can put a perch in it, an inch or two off the bottom, by drilling a dowel through the plastic. I bought a large one to accomodate his tail, but the breeder told me it was the biggest crate someone had to bring their bird home in when we picked him up! Chief doesn't like having a perch in his, only a sheet, but we don't go on long rides with him. If we were traveling for longer than a few minutes, I'd definitely put a perch in it.

wal mart and pet smart sells transport cages with a plastic tray that break down flat for easy storage.(they come in a variety of sizes)

they work great for macaws and they cant chew them into chunks

I have used a fold down black dog crate/cage from Dog.com. It can accommodate a slotted perch easily and you can add Quick-loc crocks. I like it because I ordered it with an optional floor grate which keeps the birds clean. I have a small one for a short tailed parrot (for short trips) and a huge one for once we get wherever if we are staying long. They have great carry handles too. I have also set up the large one at home to "baby sit" my friends young parrots if she needs to go away and they still need feedings. I can hang lots of toys in it. You could travel a Macaw in a big one easy. The floor grate is really nice.

Yes OK, does wal mart sell the floor grates? Dog.com was the only place I could find one with a floor grate that didnt cost ten million dollars.

We have a "Bargan Hound" brand fold down wire dog carrier from Petsmart that we use to transport Ruby, or Red Fronted Macaw. The "Bargan Hound" carrier was the only style Petsmart had with only an end door, all others were 2 door end and side that would make adding a perch harder. We added a couple of side clamp dishes and a piece of wooden dowel (attached by wood screws and fender washers) The carrier come in various sizes ours is 30x19x21 inches and is plenty big for a RFM, maybe a bit small for a GW.

Car Perch

I made a car perch out of PVC that my B&G loves when we travel. I also have tied a big branch across the backs of the head rests of the two front seats for long rides for when he gets bored. I don't normally cage him when he is in the car.
