I too need advice from the pro's about molting

I'm going to look at a Hahn's Macaw Monday morning. 165 miles away from me. The seller informed me that the 5 month old is starting to molt. Question, how can I tell if the little one is plucking, or molting? Would it have developed this habit already? Should I be concerned? I'm a newbie, but don't hold that against me. Thanks G

I would think that moulting and plucking would look different. If it's plucking you would expect to see more bald or thin patches in a more concertrated area. Moulting the bird may look a little scruffy but not too bad and it shouldn't have bald spots.

I was unable to view any pictures in your link, but birds will start molting around 5-6 months old. You will be able to tell if it is molting by new "pin" feathers that should be coming in. They are white and resemble the end of a shoestring. I have never heard of a bird starting to pluck that early in life; well, except for an African Grey once that was brought into a home with several St. Bernards. I think I would pluck too!

Thank you for your response. Sorry about the picture. I don't know how to post a picture yet. I clicked on it and it came up but I thought it would post as a picture and not a link.

Good luck with your baby. Hahns Macaws are great little birds! They have precious little faces and are a lot of bird in a tiny little body!

Thanks. I'm also getting a Panama. But have to wait a little long on her. Shes not ready yet. Cages and toys are here and put together. A stand came today. After we get use to each other I plan on taking one to work with me. To keep me company and for me to work with the bird to train it.
