Trying to work out what species of bird i met over christmas

Over Christmas I saw the most beautiful little bird but i have no idea what sort of bird it was. My partners parents had rescued it from an auction house - (Somebody had thrown out an old rusted cage with the little cutie still in it)

It is a small bird, smaller then a budgie and was a pretty pink colour. Its chirp was so pretty but the only way i can think of descriping its chirp is to say that it was almost musical. I have asked my partner to see if his parents can get us a photo of the bird so if they are able to I will post it here.

Is it a hookbill? When it perches,do the talons split two in front, two in back?If the answers are no and no I'll guess......Red Factor Canary

Canary was my first thought. Can you post a photo?

Hmmm... smaller than a budgie? I'd think finch as well but perhaps you saw a Bourke's parakeet? I think that they are larger than an American or wild budgie, though.

Here's a link to various Bourke's and their mutations:

bourke's parakeet - Google Image Search

They do have a really pretty chirp :)

OMG! That is so sad. What kind of person can just do that to a little life. Crikes, even a pet store would have bought it from them for $20 if they knew what it was and at least then it would have had a chance. THANK You for saving him!!!!!!!!! Hope your parents enjoy him/her. Please tell them to have it vetted and tested for disease. Those Auction house birds can be scary with stuff.......... Gosh I hope its ok and finally in a home that cares.

*jaw hits floor*

You know, I keep getting surprised by the the callousness and sheer evil of human beings sometimes. I have the feeling that God, looking down from whatever cloud he's hanging on, is kicking himself for not giving the frontal lobes and the opposable thumbs to the dolphins instead of us.

That being said, I'm incredibly glad that the little guy found a safe haven with your parents. Take good care of him and he'll reward you with love and song.
