Nothing but stainless steel, enamel and glass cookware in this house. I always hated teflon, it flakes off in your food after awhile.

No dear, I didn't put pepper in there.

Wow David, I'm glad no one got hurt. I had my "oh crap" moment a few weeks ago. It involved me turning on the back burner when I wanted the front. Had a plastic container sitting on top of the burner cover. Had to throw both out and air out the house. Thank goodness for the outside cage.

Accidents can happen even to expert cooks like David when other people are involved. Grant is a child and would have had no clue. IThank God this wan't teflon!

It's not worth keeping this stuff at home-give it to non-bird owning friends or a charity.

Belinda, this is a very real danger. There are many accounts of birds dying from teflon exposure. You have to do what you can to educate your parents about this. If they still refuse to change their minds, then I think you need to consider doing what is best for your birds. It's important for everyone in the household to be committed to the well being of your birds. When you say that they are unwilling to get rid of teflon "especially for the birds", it sort of sounds like they aren't crazy about you having birds at all. Are they going to support you if one of your birds gets sick and needs costly vet care? Vet bills can mount up very quickly.

I'm not trying to be unduly harsh, and I know you love your birds. If I've misunderstood the situation, please forgive me.

David glad that in the end, the babies are alive and well. Thanks again for the warning, its so sad that people dont just "get it", they need an emergency for themselves to see the light.
Hope you son was well after the event.

Did you get to pick up Diego?? How is the new baby?

Fortunately, this accident caused no casualties! The stove was cold when Grant hopped up on the counter top to snag a nutty bar. I think his foot actually hit the button on the stove and turned on the burner. He had no clue it had happened. Just goes to show that accidents happen in many forms. Who would ever have thought that could happen?

So don't be complacent. GET RID OF YOUR NONSTICK COOKWARE if you haven't already.

we got rid of non stick cooking wear 2 yrs ago. we bought our s/ cook wear from bed, bath and beyond. belinda, if you have bed, bath beyond near you and your parents/you get the 20% coupon in the mail or look for it in your local sunday paper you cn get a relatively priced s/s cooking set for a good deal.the emeril cooking set for $199-20% off coupon. what a deal. i have a flyer about telfon poisining in humans. if teflon is scratched it can leak the piosins into your food while cooking. or if it gets heated beyond 300 degrees it emits a fume that will cause you to have flu like symptoms anywhere from 2- ??? hrs later. so the next time you cook w/ teflon and it get overheated and you are in the kitchen and a few hrs later you feel sick,it is a strong possilbilty that you have teflon poisining and not the flu.

Great ideas on changing out the cookware! I was fortunate that my mom didn't have any teflon when I got my fids. The only time I had to compete with the non-stick was up at camp. My brother is the cook up there and he has only non-stick items. So I brought pots and pans from home, then watched him as he cooked to make sure he used MINE. Needless to say I don't take the birds to camp very often.
