Minah birds are like rats here, bird vermin. They are imported and taking over the terrain of our natives such as the superb parrot. Anyway took Petie to the vet and looks like he has a problem with kidneys which are paralysing his legs. Hopefully with injections over the next four days he will get better. fingers crossed.. Trying to syringe water into him but he's protesting.

Gday bigbird,

I have just come across your thread here and have to say that I have had a bird with the exact same problem as you.

I am a member of the Wilvos- Wildlife rescue up here on the sunshine coast and I rescued a gallah once that was fluffed up, could not keep on its feet and lunged forward everytime it tried to walk, feet curled up and resting on his joints, and when ever he tried to move or even rest like your beautiful superb, he would roll around.

Anyway I took him to the vet and the vet checked him out and said that he may have something wrong with his liver and that it was paralysing his legs, but unlike you I was told that there was nothing that they could do for him.

So I took him home and done all that I could do the little fella, kept him warm and syringed him water every few hours he lasted for about 4 days and did not get any better and then I came out to give him water and there he was laying in the bottom of the makeshift hospital cage feet curled and eyes closed.

I wish I had of seen your vet.

And I also wish you had of been around about 3 months ago. I was looking to purchase a handreared superb and I came across a breeder that would do one for me but as I could not find too much info on them especially as pets I settled for an Alexandrine instead.

What are they like as a pet?

Oh and for those of you in america the Superb parrot is called the Barabands Parakeet in America.

A very beautiful bird - he kind of reminds me of the Swift I fell for at the pet store. A breeder told me that the Swift is best kept in an aviary setting like the one BigBird has - not as a pet in the home. I imagin it is the same for the Superb. Sorry to hear that he's so sick.
I did enjoy looking at the photos on your profile that showed how your pond & aviary evolved - great job.

Here's some info for those who haven't seen the web pages on this bird & its habitat:

Quote:
http://www.deh.gov.au/biodiversity/t...rb-parrot.html
* The total population of the Superb Parrot is estimated to be only a few thousand birds
* It is the official emblem of NSW's Boorowa Shire
* The species is also known as the Barraband Parrot, Parraband Parakeet, Scarlet-breasted Parrot or Green Leek.

...

Why are mynas a threat to the Superb Parrot?

Recent surveys of common myna populations indicate the birds are spreading out from established populations in Canberra towards Superb Parrot habitat to the north. As the common myna competes with native birds for nesting hollows, there is concern it may soon pose a threat to the Superb Parrot. It could also impact on other hollow-dependent species such as squirrel gliders. In a landscape where hollows are rare and limiting population growth for threatened species, competition from common mynas could have a major impact on native birds and animals.

HI,

Just saw your thread, sorry to see the little guy having problems. I'm curious did the vet mention Gout being the problem? Gout is caused by to much uric acid in the system and you treat it like a liver problem.

Hope the little one gets better in a couple of days................

Must have been liver not kidneys, was kinda stressed yesterday, so got them mixed up. He is still alive. I syringe fed him some very watery handrearing mixture this morning to get some protein and water into him. He didnt take much, but at least it was something.

To Kikibird

I have only had the superbs for about 5 weeks so dont know a lot about them yet, but from what Ive seen I love. They are so gentle. Not at all skittish let me go right up to them before they fly away and they are quite curious about me. My two arent tame, but hopefully Peter will get better and I have told my partner that Im taming the first male and keeping him. They are lovely, very quiet no squawking just a gentle brrrrilllll kind of sound. Really lovely birds, Im so impressed with them.
