Parrot Jungle Island, Miami

Has anyone ever been? We went when we were down there this past summer. They have a whole bunch of parrots lining the walkways, and you can feed them and pet them. They also have a bird show, and a reptile show. They have an area where you can hold and pet the animals (I held a skunk, it was so cute!). They have these really cute orangutans that they go into their cage and play with. It was definitely interesting, and I enjoyed it.

Here's a pic of hubby feeding a bird

p.s. What kind of bird is that? It's so pretty!

No, I don't remember that. But there were some beauties, and it's amazing how many different birds they have that you don't see every day in the pet bird world.

Kristy that parrot that your hubby is feeding is just one of Australias many beautiful parrots.

It is in fact a Red Tailed Black Cockatoo, Calyptorhynchus magnificus.

It inhabits northen australia down through queensland and out to the top west of new south wales and also inhabits an area on the western side of the country in western australia, and also a small pocket in the middle of the country around alice springs.

So there you have it. Red Tailed Black Cocakatoo.

They are beautiful birds, we have about 6 types of black cockatoo here in Australia, palm cockatoo, red tailed, white tailed, yellow tailed, casuarina and the gang gang. They are all absolutely beautiful. However a couple of them are becoming increasingly rare which is sad.

They mainly eat the seed of one tree, the casuarina oak, and all over australia these trees are just being demolished. That combined with the lack of breeding hollows and slow sexual maturity is really crippeling certain populations of black cockatoos.

I have had most every parrot species as a pet or breeder since starting to keep/breed birds, therefore it was old-hat to me somewhat. I can see how most other people would enjoy it though.

Other factors that can make or break the outing are: Weather (go when cool if possible), mood, company, etc. etc......

P.S.: I personally did not like the loud, irritating, bongo-etc. type music, by the live performers, at the end of the reptile show (I beleive it was). To each his/her own though.
