For a natural fly killer and repellant use eucalyptus oil. you can mix about 3 cap fulls with water in a spray bottle and use that to spray flies and bench surfaces etc. also using cotton balls or tissues, soak them in a bit of straight eucalyptus oil and place them around the house out of reach of children and little beaks. Place some also at places like windows and doors and also place 1 or 2 in an area of the cage that the bird can not get, like under neath poop and seed tray.

Basicly the eucalyptus oil works in the same way that a citronella candle works, the smell detracts the flies and the smell also overpowers the smell of any fruits or seeds.

Also the eucalyptus oil is a great germ and bacteria killer and it is great for colds as well.

You can pick it up at probably a cheap shope near you or a chemist in the oil section or also at say a psychic type shop where they sell incense and oil etc.

It does work really well and keeps cages smelling nice and fresh also, the oil or smell of it is not harful to the birds either just be sure to keep it away from them just in case they do ingest it or something and something does go wrong, you never know.

Alternatively you can also pick up at cheap stores packs of fly traps that are not harmfull to birds, they are basicly just paper stands that have a fly attractant pasted on them and when they fly lands they stick to it. When the flies are all gone chuck the trap out and place another one in its place for a while.

Hope these help a little.

Cheers.

Hey thereHi there Maui'sMom,

Im glad you like the idea. It is also great for use around a horses bum, if you dab it around there flies wont go anywhere near the horses rear end. Sof it it works for that, im sure it will work for fruit fly.

Conure & Macaw Mom, I should have mentioned that over there you might have to look a little to find a bottle of it. Over here in Aus, we can pick up a bottle of it from any store around. Our country is just jame packed full of eucalyptus trees and this is where it comes from.

It does smell great, I use it for everything. We have a no chemical house so we use a drop or 2 of the oil and vinegar and wtare to was floors and such and it leaves the house smelling great.

It is the sought of oil you can never be without it has so many uses, health, cleaning, germ killing, put in in an oil burner etc.

Crystal glad you found it . I will be heading to the store today. What type of store did ya find it in ?
I cant wait to use it actually, I have been looking for something to give the air alittle "boost" now and then. Hub says the house sometimes smells to disinfected for his liking.

I think in Oz, where eucalyptus grows naturally, its probably an easier commodity to find. In the States, its really not native. We do have places such as Florida and California that have some plants that have adapted, but they probably aren't being harvested for their oils. I don't ever recall seeing eucalyptus here other than in cough remedies and chest rubs.
