Fruit Flies .. how to rid them from the house

I do recall a thread a little while back with lots of advice about how to get them to leave the house ( lol ) . these are not pets I wish to have.

I never had them before in the house, 2 days ago I noticed them around a banana I was going to cut up for the babies. I of course threw it outside in the trash and didnt think anything else about them.

yesterday, I noticed them near one of the cages, so again i scrubbed and scrubbed the cages to be sure that the birds were bug free.

Tonite I see them again in one of the cages, i cleaned everything and have removed the bird from the cage for the night.

How do i get rid of them safely ? Do they lay eggs and thats why they are back, even without food out on the counters.

I know i sound pretty dumb, put hub said to get on the board and see if i can find a solution. Once again, I need your expert advice.

Thanks so much

First of all, you cannot have any fruits or veggie sitting out. You must put them in ther frig.

Now, you have a number of options:

1. Take an ordinary zip lock bag and place a ripe cut banana inside. When the bag. Leave it open and trap them inside. You can simply close the bag and toss them in the trash.

2. My favorite. Leave about one inch of wine in the bottom of the wine bottle uncorked. The flies go in, drink the wine, get drunk and ultimately drown. Also, being tipsy helps you enjoy the show.

3. There are commercial lure traps sold in many hardware and feed stores.

That's Jeth's favorite way to kill the fruit flies!

Jill:

Its the ONLY reason she even buys bananas in the first place. She simply misunderstood the directions. She thought she was supposed to drink a bottle of wine and run around the house with a banana and a zip lock catching flies. Frankly, its my most favorite memory of my trip to Kansas. And, don't let her try to tell you otherwise.

no, tell him to go for you! According to Jeth, you must drink 95% of the bottle and leave the dregs for the fruit flies in the open wine bottle.

That is TOO funny

I use the commercial traps that I can buy at the local bird stores. Two or three times a year I get fruit flies or rice moths, no matter what precautions I take!

I left a wine cooler out, a bowl of vinagar among other thing, I just can't remember what they were. It worked though. Crystal

I have a much more wicked (and esthetically pleasing) solution!
I bought a small selection of carnivorous plants!
I have a tiny pitcher plant, a Venus flytrap, and a Sundew.

I like ripe fruit, which means keeping it out (or even in a sunny window) to ripen, much of the year when you can't buy it ripe. So I just keep the bananas and other fruit in a bowl near these little green monsters. Works like a charm! I never even see a fruit fly. And I never have to worry about feeding my cool little plants.
