met another Greenwing

I just had to share this because it was too cute. I met another GW tonight. I took my dog to have her picture taken with Santa (the picture is posted in the photos). As I was standing in line, I noticed a GW in line ahead of us. I got way too excited as I tried to had my dog over to my partner. He didn't know what was going on. I went to go see the baby. She was very cute, and such the show off. She bobbed her head up and down on command, and raised her wings to show me how big she was. I talked with her owner for a bit and found out that she use to work at the pet store that we frequent (the one I saw the U2 in awhile back - he's in his new home now!).

Seeing the GW, rekindled my dreams of having one. Not to worry, I'm still very much interested in gettting my grey first!! A Macaw won't come for quite some time.

thanks for listening,

~d

D.

The one thing I've learned along the way is this: stay focused. If you always wanted a GW, stay the course. If you decide to get a grey along the way, the grey will never be a GW nor will it ever replace the longing to have one. If you've always wanted a grey, that's fine. I can't tell you how many folks start with little birds on the way to acquiring their dream birds and simply rehome their litte birds. I know I had to rehome my keets because my macaws wouldn't let them alone. I have real guilt about that decision. After all, the keets were here first.

As a result of me filling my house up with other people's cast off parrots (God, that sounds awful for I love them all to pieces) I will NEVER have the GW I always wanted. There simply is no more room at the inn. Would I give up any of my birds? No way. They really are like my grandkids. Would I change things if I could. Hmmm. I'd have to think about it, but frankly I probably would. Instead of thinking that I was the ONLY person on earth good enough for these poor fildren, I'd have found them loving homes with others who were just as loving as me.

I know that in my heart of hearts, I'm a macaw girl. I just fundamentally know that to be a fact. Fate has sent me BGs. Who knows. Maybe what they say is true "be careful what you wish for, you just might get it"

Thanks for the words of wisdom.

I recently "fell in love" with GWs. I've always been in love with Greys. For as long as i can remember, having a Grey was my ultimate goal. So, I'm not getting off of that focus. My problem is (as I've posted before), I'm an animal person. And I can get greedy. So, sometime I have to "check myself". I always end up wanting too much. We'll start off with the Grey, and work from there. Since I've had a Goffin in the past, I still have a soft spot in my heart for one. Then we'll see what happens in the future.

I don't know if you know this but african greys, cockatiels and cockatoos are powder producing birds that are fine together and with most other birds I know of but are not recommended to be housed next to or near macaws because the macaws can sometimes have respiratory problems caused by the powder that other birds aren't susceptible to. So unless you are able to house them very seperately I would look at what birds I truly want most and build on your flock from there. I would love to have a b&g macaw but I will never be able to add one because I have 2 cockatoos and a grey and they are kept in one room. I don't know if knowing this before hand would have made any difference on the flock I chose but i'm glad I found out before adding a macaw because i know lots of people that have had to rehome their macaws or cockatoos because of the health issues their macaws have had. Or others that are currently dealing with health issues that took years to detect and are now irreversible. Just something to consider when thinking about your flock of the future. Also its easy to get addicted to birds and to keep wanting to add to your flock but getting overwhelmed and burned out can happen quickly. Take your time, always weigh the best interests of your current flock before adding a new member. Each addition changes your current flock dynamic in ways that can't always be predicted. Its so easy to take in too many and sometimes you do just have to step back and check yourself and make sure you set and stick to limits.

Thanks Cindy,

I was aware of the dust "situation" which is another factor to having or not having a Macaw. I honestly didn't know about such a thing before joining here! So, this site has taught me a thing or 2. As much as I'd love to have a Macaw, the reality is, I probably won't. Unless I can provide proper housing (meaning keeping them seperated). I do plan on having some sort of air filtration system (hepa or something like it). (for future references) Do things like that help Macaws? Either way, right now, the heart is set on Greys and 'Toos. And Cindy, since Len breeds boths, I'll probably stick with him. We'll see how things turn out with the Grey!! Keep your fingers crossed.

Len Charette? He's a great guy and a good breeder. If that's who you are referring to, you'll be happy.

I"m not sure of his last name. He's in Bensalem, PA. He's expecting TAGs soon, I'm waiting for an email from him letting me know that they've hatched. I think both you and Cindy have told me about him.
