I've gotten a few from my zon that almost made me pass out. not sure what he grabbed in my wrist, but it immediately dropped me to my knees, and I actually saw stars.I have scars from the two more severe bites.
My husband was bitten by our Grey, and he could not use his thumb for a week. it swelled up 3 times it size and he couldnt move it. Lots of blood, but no lasting damage. I have gotten bitten by Sydney, the hand fed mommas boy.....it wasnt severe, but hurt!(no scar) this is a picture just to remind people ALL birds bite. EVEN HAND FED BABIES!

Ducky has nailed me pretty good but not enough to call serious. Once, long time ago, he got me on the neck and it really looked like a hickey -- it was rather embarassing. The last time he bit me was in January 2006 and it was on the finger, bled but not serious.
However, I did sustain a more serious bite from my friend's too. It ended up infected and no matter what I did, it wouldn't heal. It was so bad that it was scary. Finally, I broke down and went to the doctor. Turns out the doctor was very familar with bird bites as he had a bird and sustained several bites himself. |

Well, I've sustained some pretty serious bites, mostly in the early days before I learned to read Corina's body language (and before I wised up and wrapped my arm and hand in a towel before I let her climb my person) Dave put her on my shoulder, where she proceeded to bite my ear and cut into the cartilage.
I was never so tempted to make a parrot pot pie as that day. Since then, I've gotten better at avoiding serius bites. I try to avoid picking the boys up by my hands; rather, I let them climb onto the forearm. My forearm is a harder target to inflict serious damage on. I've also gotten better at reading them before I try to pick them up. If one of them does strike at me, I give him a time-out from my person (means I ignore him for about a minute or so) and I put him on a perch. Much of the time, they are lunging out of excitement - so they need a minute to cool down. The last serious bite was Bob biting my hand out of excitement. That one left a scar.

I would not go so far as to say serious, but my Amazon did draw blood tonight on both of my hands, and was repeatedly flying at me trying to viciously bite my face and head over multiple hours. He has never done this before in the 13 years he has lived with me, I think he is being hormonal and jealous of our new Red Fronted Macaw.

My husband and I have had plenty of bites that bruised and/or drew blood, but nothing I would call serious. Had a friend whose macaw broke her finger once.

Just on Christmas eve day my bare eyed cockatoo ripped a chunk out of My forearm!
It was icky & very painful, turned into an infection -- I had to get a tetnis shot, injection antibiotics, and a prescription! I am just finishing it up now & I personally don't think its getting much better. |
