Which conure do YOU prefer?
After alot of research and thinking...I've halfway decided that a conure will be our next addition. However, with all the subspecies being so gorgeous, it's hard to decide which one! I LOVE the colors of the Suns...wow...but, I don't want to pick a bird on looks, doesn't seem right. I guess you gotta have a preference to their looks, but that's not what it's all about.
Which subspecies do YOU prefer? Noise isn't a factor here at all...strictly asking about personality, hormonalness (is that even a word), bonding with all or one...all that good stuff. I know it will be at least 3-4 months (and that's being skimpy...I'm actually thinking longer) before I can get one, but I'd love to be able to actually KNOW the bird I'm bringing home. I'm an info junkie, so having as much info as I can on these guys is very important to me. I also realize that I could end up with a bird that meets NONE of the norms...I'm ready for that too...will just learn as I go along :) Don't worry, I'm reading, reading READING about conures as well. I just like personal experience as well...it tells so much more than a webpage with a run down list of characteristics that may or may not match up with what they really act like. I know you guys have probably answered this question a million times, but I also know you guys love talking about your babies...lol. So, lay it on me..the good, the bad and the baddest. (I KNOW that's not a word) Thanks! Kim |

LOL Cindy, you sound like me with them! I guess everyone might think their sub species is the best...maybe wasn't the best question to ask...hehe. Maybe someone will chime in and say 'I have ____ conure and a _____ conure and this one or that one is the sweetest'...or whatever...lol.
I've got some time on my hands pretty soon (hubby going on leave) so I think I'll take a day just to visit the petstores around and visit with as many as I can. I have nothing against adopting, but sheesh...have you read their applications? LOL. If I thought I had half a chance I'd get a rescue...but from the looks of it I wouldn't. Breeders seem to be scarce around here...I've googled till I can google no more it seems. If anyone knows of a breeder in the New England area give me a yell! Or a rescue for that matter. I have no idea if our humane society has birds...I'll give them a call for sure to find that one out! Guess when I find the right bird it won't matter what subspecies it is, huh? Thanks for trying Cindy :) You just helped solidify in my mind that Conures are great in general! Kim |

Oh wow! That's a pretty bird!!! I wonder if I could find one around here. I'll keep my eyes open for sure!
Hubby really liked the Sun's...first thing he said was 'that looks expensive'...I said well do you like the looks and he said well yeah...lol. I'm not going to go on looks though. If a sun likes me, I'll get a sun, if it's something else...fine too! I'm going looking around this weekend I think...just to see a few, and hopefully interact with some! Too bad I can't bring one home yet...lol. Kim |

LOL golden conures sell here for around 1400. Definetly the most pricey conure.
With conures even within it's own species personality diffrers wildy based one how they were raised, handled and how they get along with you. To find the perfect conure you need to search. You need to hold each one. There will come a time when you pick one up and say this is my bird! It is something in your heart that will tell you. The bird will seem to bond with you instantly. Take your time looking. Do not buy one on impulse. I think there is a perfect conure for every personality. It is just finding the right one. How I picked out my first conure Zorro the nanday: I didn't search I was brought not really wanting a bird at all. He was a present from a family friend to my kids.I did not even know a conure was a parrot. Once I picked Zorro up out of a bin of other babies I just knew heart and soul that this was "my" bird. He pushed his way into my hands and gripped tight. He seemed to know that I was his human. I was not even "into" parrots. I also knew within the first day that this was not a pet to give a child. I went and got my kids a guinea pig LOL Lynda |

Lynda,
yeah, I'm really hoping I find the right one when I can get one, otherwise I won't be getting one! I could win a bird over, but then again, maybe I couldn't! Never know I guess. What a sweet story about Zorro! I agree, they're not a pet for a child! My kids mess with the budgies some, but they know not to get them out when I'm not around and can watch them. Oooooh if I were an impulse buyer...lol. I was looking at the birds at the pet shop the other day, and there was a baby cockatoo there (I know, I know...I read mytoos.com...lol) and he wouldn't say anything while I was standing there, but as soon as I turned to walk away he'd say 'hello' in the most pitiful voice...like PLEASE come back and play with me! If I hadn't had a friend with me rushing me I'd have spent alot more time with him, and most likely would have asked to hold him. He was soooo precious! On the way home my mind was going over and over expenses....hehe. Trying to figure out how to fit him in with bills and all that good stuff. Not to mention cage and all that. I'm glad I couldn't work it out though...at least not yet. I'm not ready for a too. I will take my time when I'm able to get one. I can't wait till I can really start my search though. Gotta get some cash in my extra bank account that I don't use first! That account has already been delegated to the new family member...just gotta start working on it...hehe. I'll be able to REALLY start saving after Christmas. Kim |

I love cherrys, but I wouldn't exactly recommned one as they can be moody little buggers if they don't get what they want when they want it! LOL
I've got a pic here, http://image22.webshots.com/23/7/72/...2wITcSr_ph.jpg with the two tiels! (just copy and paste the url into a new browser) With the cockatoo, I know how you feel! I was in Petsupermarket and I was surprised. They had a blue crowned conure, a white eyed conure, and a cherry head conure which I hadn't noticed when I first walked into the store. I was mostly surprised that they have a white eyed and a cherry head. I asked to see the cherry head, and even though he was tramatized from the flight and didn't quite trust anyone, he was lovely! The people there thought that I was going to buy him, so I said I'd think on it even though I had no intentions on it. I would if I had the money, but alas, I don't! The one who should have him is the guy that has been working with the conure as he's really helped the conure to settle down some and even said that he'd like to take him home!

OMG...I couldn't work at a pet store! I'd end up bringing everything home they couldn't sell...hehe. Hubby already looked at me tonight and said 'we're gonna have a houseful of birds before you're done, aren't we?' I said most likely...lol. I've finally found a pet that I'd LOVE to learn more about and have more and he doesn't fuss! I'm amazed...hehe. If it were up to me we'd have a houseful of dogs, ferrets, herps, and a yard full of horses (that WILL happen once we settle back into civilian life..I miss my horses :() It's hard living with someone that's not an animal lover...lol.
