The longer you have birds, the more stuff you'll be adding to your kits. Its amazing the stuff they can get themselves into. And, you can count on it being a weekend or holiday.

That's why most of us with a bunch of birds pretty much have our own ambulance. Hopefully, they also have the textbooks or practical training to know how to use this stuff. Its real hard to learn in a crisis.

I wish there was a first aid class for birds that we could all attend. That would be wonderful.

hmm.... maybe there could be a thread created by the more experienced bird owners describing common deseases and symptoms and what to do in these cases in a somewhat concentrated form (i apologize if that's already on here - i haven't looked, just crossed my mind).

of course a class would be the ultimate thing....

ps: wrt to learning in crisis - i had to pull a marble out of a fish's mouth with pliers (thanks to valo's first aid kit those were right there with flashlight and towel and and), and i do not want to learn like this again... patient survived and is doing well, but i had nightmares afterwards since that was not pretty at all.

Yeah... you really never know. But I learnt a lot from that - mainly in respect to the stress you're all the sudden in. For fish you can't get a vet, so it's all up to you. A situation that could totally happen to the bird too. And there's a good amount of desparation if you have no clue what to do. A situation that I sure wanna try to avoid when it comes to the fid.
But at the same time, I was amazed what I was capable of just because I had to... pliers in a fish - still gives me the horrible shivers.

Ever thought about writing a book? You have the experience

We purchased a couple of videos on ebay titled Techniques in Avian Medicine. The topics are capture and restraint, grooming, physical examination, sample collection, phlebotomy, nasal flushibng, crop lavage, splinting/bandaging. It is extremely helpful to see it done by an expert. It is produced by Veterinary Learning Systems Co., Inc.

Thanks, JR. That would be a great thing to add to your wish list for any parrot owner.

If you do, please have someone video tape it. That would be an awesome resource.

they might have a live thingy there. They do conferences. So maybe if they do, others can have parties to watch together.
