Angry crazy pet store prices

ok, The other day I went into my LPS and they had a baby one month old umbrella cockatoo for $3000

And the worst part about it is that some one who buys that bird is going to be someone who does not do there research because if they did they would know that they are asking about $2000 to much. And it a umbrella cockatoo thats a bird that you really need to do a lot of research on!!!! even has I write this my umbrella cockatoo is screaming her head off.( but that what you get when you have a cockatoo) but, the ppl who buy her will not know that and that is why these birds are ending up in rescues!!!!

sorry for going on but it just makes me kinda mad!

Sorry, but when I feed, water, provide toys, and cuddle a cockatiel every day for sometimes months on end, you betcha I am going to charge $150 for a cockatiel. I think people should charge more for them. Puts more value on the life.

People complain about pet store prices. I have a pet store, we make NO money yet. None. I don't try to get as much money as I can get, I try to break even. Generally on bird sales, I not only don't break even, I loose money.

I understand what you mean breeders dont have to pay for rent for their stores, ect
Having a pet store is hard and from what I have seen most dont make it.

I was mainly talking about the ones who don't give a rat's butt about the birds. The ones you walk in and none of the animals are being taken care of & their in horrible conditions. Sorry if I offended you. Crystal

I absolutely agree with that - the more care a bird needs, the more expensive it should be. I can live with the stores/breeders making some money off it (if they aren't chains, and under the condition that they take proper care of the birds)... but especially at stores, it makes people think about getting a bird a lot harder when they have to spend more money.
When I got Valo, I stuck my nose into every book I could find a week prior. Just to make sure that I'm investing my money into something that I can deal with and that I can take proper care of it. (granted, what I paid for Valo is not all that much but since I'm a student, it was still more than a third of my monthly income with cage and toys makes you think really hard if you wanna do it, especially considering all the things you have to let go to compensate - but worth it every penny)

Just becuse a bird cost alot does not mean it is going to be taken care of properly.
Think of some spoilded rich kid then gets board of the bird or some macaw wanted just for show along with hes car and huge saltwater aqurauim.
the pepole who dont have the money are they ones who will really love and treat the bird they best.
the only down side is that we have to streach our selfs for proper vet care

Main good thing that I see in this situation... At least not everyone who can flash some pretty pennies is going to be able to walk out with that cockatoo! Yeah, it's possible that some rich person who could care less about money could walk in and buy the bird, but at least it deters away people who are "cheap" to begin with, and only want something that'll look pretty and talk (even though it also deters good homes).

Actually, I can top the $3000 for the umbrella cockatoo. How about $8,000 for a rose breasted cockatoo?!? I saw an adorable baby at our local Petco with that price on the cage. I handled the bird for a while and it was a real sweety but not eight grand worth of sweety!
