Suz, please don't feel guilty if you don't click with this bird. There will be someone who is perfect for him whether it's your BF or someone else. Don't buy him if you are not 100% committed to being his forever home.

I'm a small-medium bird person myself and I love them. I know it seems like everyone has a Macaw on here and everyone is raving about them, but they are very high maintenance and need lots of cleaning and toys. Gorgeous though they are, they don't suit everyone's lifestyle.

I couldn't agree more. If less than 10% of folks make good bird owners regardless of what birds they keep, surely only 1% would be good prospects for cockatoos or macaws. They are the most exhausting, financially as well as physically of all of them. In many cases, its better to have the dream than the reality. I speak from first-hand knowledge.
