The list:
Ring–necked Parakeets
Monk (Quaker) Parakeets
Patagonian Conures

Quakers, Ringnecks and Patagonian Conures. Queen of Bavarias and Vinaceous Amazons are legal but only if purchased in the State and sold in the state. I believe that is a Country-wide law imposed by Federal Non-Game and Exotic Wildlife.

They are considered to be crop destroyers and menaces. The dumb part of the law is this: They are legal in Pennsylvania, which is right across the river. A human can swim the span of the river in some parts. NJ feels that if one was to get out and meet up with another, they could procreate, colonize and become a menace and destroy the crops. (NJ is known as the "Garden State"). However, who is to say that two could not fly across the river into NJ and do the same thing. Dumb law. I love those birds. They are fabulous. Same thing for Quakers. Patagonians - that one I'm not sure about.

Actually, the biggest problems with Quakers is their insistance of building huge nests on electrical transformers. These things are HUGE. Consequently, when linemen have to climb poles and work on them, its a nightmare. And, very unsafe for both birds and linemen.

Some states have figured out ways of keeping the birds away from the transformers and that's great. However, most power companies will destroy the nests.

In Maryland, we don't have a wild quaker problem. Its usually further north. They build near the transformers because they are high and very warm. Most are filled with a liquid that holds heat.

My husband once was a lineman and I know how treacherous that job is. I also have a quaker and love him dearly. However, in the dead of winter, with power lines down and lineman in danger of their very lives trying to return power to all of us, I do understand why encouraging wild flocks is not tolerated.
