An interesting article: Why is it SO EXPENSIVE?

I found this interesting. Could be useful to some people.

Thanks for posting that. It makes me absolutely spitting mad to read that some people think of the small and less expensive parrots as disposable and less valuable than a larger parrot.

It's sad.
I thought about adding a disclaimer for you. When I read the beginning of the article, all I could think about was little Jerry and how lucky he is.

I had wondered why the lab work was so much more expensive than it typically is for cats.
Thanks for posting - it was very informative!

it really is disgusting that people think that way. it makes me sick to my stomach. People think that way about alot of "inexpensive" anmals. I had a co worker who thought it was funny to kill a mean fish by putting it in a glass of milk. "It just a fish". I gave her the riot act when she told me. All lives are valuable.

i can attest to hearing people say that.

I was visiting Sampson one day while he was hospitalized. Our visits would last hours. The Vets would let me stay als long as I liked because it was a LONG drive to see him. I went everyday. After I would get him to eat, we would snuggle. (it was this time of year ) Sometimes he would fall asleep in my arms. I just wanted him to be comfortable.
The vets would give me an actual exam room to spend my time with him.
One day when he was sleeping, I could hear what was going on in the next room. A woman was there with her bird. What type, I dont know. But when the Dr suggested to run some tests, the woman asked the price, and started to scream..."are you kidding me, I aint spending that on this D*mn bird, let him die."
Now, I'm in the next room. I had spent over $6,000 already trying to prevent Sampson from dying. I started to cry. I put my head down on the exam table next to him. I couldnt believe how hard everyone was trying for Sam, and this woman just said to "let her bird die"
I wanted to kill her, but couldnt do anything but hold my boy tighter.

Its sad.....real sad....

I, unfortunately, hear about this sort of thing very often being so involved with the smaller birds. I often feel it is a duty of mine to stick up for the little guys since I can personally attest to how wonderful and loving they are.

It is sad and it isn't always just the small birds that end up with a bufoon for an owner. The same exact thing was said to me, regarding my Greenwing. The bird was not worth treating because she was just a pet, not a breeder bird and she had no value.

I think most people just have no idea how emotional and loving birds are. They have feelings just as much if not more so than cats and dogs. The article makes a good point about treaing a show dog vs a mutt someone got for free. No one would hesitate to spend money saving little Johnny's pet mutt so why should our precious Fids be any different? I love my Tiels which I got for free (born in my home) just as much as people who pay $8000 for a Macaw in Australia.
