What Will You Do?

I'd like to revisit a topic from a while back.

Gary recently posted a thread about the importance of having an emergency avian vet, but making sure you have the financial resources (or an agreed upon arrangement with your vet) is important as well.

I've always said, If one of my fids gets sick, I'll find a way to pay for the proper care.

Let me tell you, saying "I'll find a way" is a lot easier than actually having a plan in place.

I've spent the last 4 days at the vet with Wrigley. It has not been cheap, and we don't even know what's wrong yet.

I'm not complaining about the cost. At all.

We'll figure out how to pay for it. We're doing everything for her, and that's what's important right now.

I hope no one is ever in this situation, but realistically, someone else will be.

Please have a plan in place, because, believe me, worrying about a sick bird AND worrying about money makes the stress of the sick bird harder to handle.

Megan- I hope I never have to be in the situation you are in now. I would just be a mess.

Thankfully my parents support me 150% (and spoil me rotten ) so if there was ever an emergency concerning Ollie and I didn't have the money, they would offer it up in a heartbeat. That is my current plan.

I keep one credit card here precisely for the emergency care. It has a limit of $10,000. Beyond that, I have no plan.

This is part of the reason I do what I do. I told Dr. O, if she ever moves I'm going with her. Beyond that, I'd sell most of my belongings for their healthcare.

I also have a credit card, if I have to use it. I know my Vet personally and he will let me make payments. If he is out of town, I have 2 back up Vets.

We recently had to go through something like that when our cat Squirt was suffering from a urethral blockage... Squirt is practically my mothers cat, her 'baby'. She kept saying she didn't have the money to pay for a vet visit, but when he looked far too worse to let him be he was taken in to the vets. Final bill was about $860, which my mother couldn't afford to pay... so they decided to let her make payments, however had to make a $300 downpayment first... so the total bill actually ended up being nearly $1,000.

She had to cancel some payments to make the $300... one of which was $25 dollars going to WARF which came from the $125 adoption fee of Kita... I don't know what my mother did with the $125 (cash, mind you) but she said she couldn't afford to send a check their way... Instead she probably used the $125 for bills or otherwise, and only decided several weeks, if not months later, that she'd make increments of $25 over a period of 5 months to WARF for the adoption of Kita.... I don't think they've received more than one or two payments....

I already used Plan A and B and stopped adding up the medical bills since last July, when we went over the $5,000.00 mark, for the care of two birds.

credit card for starters, then my parents who'd help me out in a heartbeat (and whose credit card i have), then the BF who is also parront, then if all that doesn't cover it - take out a student loan, since i don't have any so far.

Megan, contact
www.uan.org
for the lifeline grant
also contact
www.imom.org
to see if you can set up a spot for donations.

I donate to both of these organizations because they helped me when I needed it most.

I can tell you personally, even when you have plan A,B and Even C, you better have plan D ready to go.
I now have a credit card with a limit of 14,500 on it for the use of the birds.
Emma has health insurance on her.
no matter how prepared you are, you really are never prepared.
I spent $7,000 in 6 weeks of treatment.
be aware that care credit often has an interest rate of 21.98%
I did NOT know that when it was first introduced.
