Maybe I should correct myself with saying that they are offered about 30%, also the same with pellets, nuts, dried fruits in thier bowls. then they also gets served fresh fruits and granola/oatmeal/eggs for breakfast and dinner consists of multi bean mix, fresh veggies(too much to list) either a pasta or mixed with thier beak appetite, and whatever else we are eating.
it is about 1.5 oz of seed from a small bathroom sized dixie cup. the cup is 3 ozs
We serve(notice the word serve??thats right...I am a slave to these birds) no sunflower because the vets I have used and have come to talk to the club said the sunflower seed are like a narcotic. Its like eating twinkies continously, thus the fatty liver and such. This holds true for alot of amazons. I do think like Leigh said, that its important for them to get the oils they need somewhere, and because of the pellets, I dont suppliment.

I do find the Higgins mix to be fresh, clean and i have never had a problem. I do however take out the peanuts. I have a fear of peanuts and Aspergillosis, considering I have the species most affected by the disease.

JoanneinNC, I think the smaller mix they make like cpryslek mentioned might work well. I think the safflower gold, large hookbill, would be too big. I do know they have a small hookbill, tho I never tried it.
I will look it up and see if they mention where to get it by you.

I just went in and looked and realized these are Parrotlets we are talking about. My parrotlets were on Harrison's and Zupreem pellets and once a week got Goldenfeast Petite Hoobill Legume. No sunflower seeds and lots of good stuff. They are now with my brother and sister-in-law who confiscated them from me. In addition, my P'lets got a LARGE quantity of fresh foods. They don't hold their food, so I would place it in their cups whole. The little garbage pails that they are, they would eat almost all of their fresh food! I also gave them - once week - a treat of Boca Nuts which they promptly devoured.

I view seed as junk food for birds for the most part BUT I do feed my flock a SunSeed mix that contains dried fruit and vegetables. I don't know the exact ingrediants off hand but it has more dried fruits and veggies than seeds. My guys get a small handful once a week.

On the subject of Avian Trio, I highly recommend it! It has done wonders for my adopted cockatoo, Mickie. I will be giving it to the rest of my flock, too! Trust me, I was very hesitant to try this but after I did .... well, I can't say enough good about it!

Good luck with Merlin and keep us posted.

Rick

It also has a ton of little seeds that he doesn't eat so there is more waste than what he actually eats. I also offer him other foods in other dishes. He is a feather puller/destroyer. He's only been here for 3 weeks and I don't know how old he is since I adopted him from his second family.

Thanks so much!

Just a lil note. With fruit in a seed mix, DOUBLE check there is NO sulpher used for preservative. Most dried fruit has it in it. In fact it's hard to find some w/o.

Kathie, Can I? Can I?

It is a totally wonderful blend of foods!!! I know there are a couple different types of pellets along with human grade fruit, veggies and herbs. Most people that I know that feed it to their birds say that their birds love it. It took a little bit of time here in my house for them to get used to it. But, I have close to empty bowls daily. I leave it in their cages throughout the day, and they love it. I can't get over how good it smells, too!!! Almost makes me want to try some myself!!! If you're in New Jersey (or close by), I'd definitely say, get over to Bird Paradise to get yourself some! If you're not close by, ORDER IT!!!! And then take a vacation so you can come to Jersey to check out Bird Paradise!!

I buy a lot of seed mix from Topper. I have them mix their sunflower or safflower mix with their fruit and nut. My birds will only eat this now. I tried using Higgins and Sun in an emergency when I forgot to re-order in a timely manner, but won't make that mistake again. They left far too much in their bowls to suit me.

The mix is called Backland's Parrot Fruit Special. Its not cheap if you buy smaller amounts, but you get what you pay for.

What do you folks think about Tropican? Jessica always has teh Tropican Pelets for small parrots. Plus she will get a spoon of the Tropican Tropimix for breakfast or supper. As well she gets So of what we eat (pastas/veggies and such) She gets treats once in a while (whole penuts)

Also I read here that Parrots are Lactos Intolarant! But I find that hard to believe.... Jessica LOVES Cheese. (just not very often) She also has had Pasta with White sause. as well as other tastes of things with milk in it. I have watched her and her poop and such with no changes. she seems find and normaly wants WAY more.

RED PALM OIL folks!!! USE IT!! Please!!! listen to me...Im not a vet, or an expert. Ive only had this Grey since July. They eat Red Palm Nuts in the wild. This is what activates the oil gland. I started to see immediate results.
Also I dont agree with serving sunflower seeds.. SAFFLOWER ONLY..AS A TREAT! Fat is important to humans and animals as well. Without it, they dry out. People will get fatty liver tumors also if they eat too much. Moderation is the key. Avian Trio...is a blessing from God!

Is the red palm oil mainly for Grey's, something they need or would all types of parrots benefit from it?
