Babies galore!

Checked some of my nesting boxes this morning and had a nice surprise! Lots of little ones!

Have a baby rainbow lorikeet, 3 baby tiels, two small white balls of fluff, I think they are white zebra finches. Dont know who has been nesting in there yet, but will find out soon enough! And about 4 baby red rumps.

Has anyone here hand reared red rumps before? Are they suitable for hand training?

Settle Felisdomesticus!! I have never seen a pet one in Australia, only as aviary birds. I know plenty about them as far as owning them and looking after them, my question was has anyone here had a tame one!! I ALWAYS research my bird breeds as well as ask the original breeders a million questions before taking them home. This is my first season with red rumps and I find this board an excellent source for information gathering from people who have already been there done that. I am only investigating their pet potential before I spend time training them!

I really haven't heard of them being kept as pets... Don't know anyone who has one as a pet, or not any that I could recall. I, too, would be interested in how they are as pets! I've heard that they can be aggressive birds in the aviary, so if you do handraise one or more, please do let us know!

I have been to heaps of Bird Fairs in Australia and I have yet to see Red-Rumps sold as handreared pets. Same with Rosellas. They are gorgeous, but apparently they won't stay tame, they go wild after a while. They are sold as aviary birds here so you might as well let the parents rear them.

Im going to let the parents do all the hard work but bring them in for handling when they are taking care of themselves. They arent a very popular bird here but will give it a shot. They are so pretty, cant understand why they are so unpopular. Maybe after some training time I will know why!! They are aggressive in the aviary but only with each other. I have them in a community cage and they squabble occassionally amongst themselves, but generally leave each other alone. Will separate the two pairs when the new aviary is finished

BigBird -- A poster on another bird forum I visit has a red rump as a pet, more or less. If memory serves me correctly the bird was a rehome or rescue.

I'm not sure how hands-on-friendly the bird is but I seem to recall that the bird enjoys interacting with people to some degree. That could have been based on the bird's personality or maybe just my perception of the situation.

I have a Western Rosella that was handfed as a baby, the breeder didn't handle him too much other than to feed him so he was skiddish when he came home, and I had to work with him a little, then I decited I wanted him to be a breeder, so I sent him outside in my breeding area. That was two years ago, and he still is as tame as I got him to be, he jumps at the cage door and waits for me to come and see him. So he hasn't gone wild - I can't imagine him being like that, but maybe he is just an exception??

Thanks all I will let you know how they go. Though I think it is going to be difficult to find them homes, they dont seem to be very popular here. Cant understand why I think they are so pretty.
