I always knew when I couldn't sleep or constantly had them on my mind. When I can't function without them, then they become the "cure".

I wanted a bird for ages but it had never been the right time, especially because we've always had the plan to move back to America in a few years. However, when I saw Humphrey in the pet store, housed with a Quaker who bullied him (her) mercilessly (wouldn't let Humph on the (only) perch, pecked him on the head (he had a bald spot) and there were no toys, etc) I stood there looking at Humphrey, crying. I called my husband on my cell phone and he said, "buy the bird then if you want him". I didn't. I thought i would go home and think rationally about it. I couldn't sleep that night thinking about Humphrey. So I went back in the next morning and bought him. I gave him the name Humphrey, btw. |I took a cab home with Humphrey in a box, scratching, and sticking his beak out of the air holes. I held the box close and spoke to Humphrey, making promises "I promise that I will do everything I can to give you the best life possible." Such a terrified little creature he was, but is now blossoming. I can even pet him a little now, and he flies all over the house to find me, then lands on my head. My dear bird. You can read this story from Humph's perspective on his first blog entry, linked below in my sig!
When I do move back to AMerica, I will be getting another bird, but I want it to be a rescue. I will probably volunteer at a rescue and see who takes to me. Michele and Humph

Well, it depends on how long you can function without eating or sleeping. I have held out for as long as 9 days. When you feel the "urge" you must divert yourself from even looking at the little darlings. Look at your miserable checkbook balance and realize that you probably shouldn't go anywhere near a bird store or a Petsmart until the urge passes. You may have to buy your dogfood at the grocery store until you can trust yourself.
If anyone starts to tell you about this adorable baby __________, you must switch the subject immediately to the last great movie you saw, who is having an affair with whom, or about the new computer you've been looking at. I lied about restraint. I actually went 2 whole months before bringing home a baby BG. It was a fluke, mind you. I know I'll never be that strong again. However, should fate rear its ugly head and put you in the path of a charming little bird and IF you actually HAVE a checkbook TO balance, then you MIGHT want to see if it likes you. You already like it THE OUTLAW

Then that lil cockatoo should be mine...lol. He likes me and I like him. I held him yesterday! Biiiiig mistake...lol. Once again I was rearranging finances in my head, looking on ebay for cages....all that good stuff. I simply WON'T let myself get him cause I'm scared I'm not ready for them...but oooooh man, if feeling like a teenager in love, thinking about her beau constantly is what it feels like when you find the right bird, he's supposed to be mine...lol. Been thinking about him for over a week, made worse yesterday, let's see how long I can do it, or take over my mind with something else!

Hey Kim, I understand how you feel. The first parrot I fell in love with was an Umbrella Cockatoo, named Sabrina...later changed to Sabastian. He was just the sweetest thing. I was working at a pet store at the time and would always have him out with me. I actually almost got fired because he bit right through a phone cord that was next to the main computer line. :? I didn't know a whole lot about them at that time...anyway, I went to work one day and he was gone, they sent him to another store because he was getting too attached to the staff (I wasn't the only one in love with him) and needed to get a forever home.
I decided at that moment that one day I would get my own cockatoo. Years later I had the opportunity to adopt one. Things didn't work out because I realised my work schedule wouldn't provide giving her the time/attention she needed. So I did some research and found another breed that better fit my lifetstyle. I guess my point in this is make sure you can give this baby everyting it will need first. Then run with getting him! |

All of our birds chose us. As with most rescues there are always visits before taking them to their forever homes, to make sure the match is right.
Sydney was saved from a pet store where he was stuck in a tiny cage with 4 other tiels. He bounced around the front of the cage dancing and chirping just waiting for us to take him home. We did immediately. Logan was all alone and very sad in that glass tank in the pet store one small perch and looking so much the baby he was. We played with him a while and he was so happy to perch on us and showed no fear so, took him straight home that day. Vicki was our first rescue from the Humane Society she was so curious about us yet so scared when we saw her the 1st time. She had never been handled and had only been out of a cage to switch cages. She took much more time to trust but within the 1st 2 months she was stepping up and perching on shoulders as if she had always done it. Wiley was the 1st rescue from Phoenix Landing. It seemed to take forever to get the visit rolling. They are so busy most of the time. When he finally got to us he seemed to take to us both immediately and was happy to be scratched and held. Everyone agreed it was a perfect match. 2 days later the honeymoon was over and we realized that we had our work cut out for us. We found out he had been abused and mistreated for a long time. He is now a very happy well adjusted bird with a few minor problems that get better everyday. He is the grumpmeister but demands attention, love and skritches which he ran from and fought before. Anne Marie and Junior are the last 2 we adopted from Phoenix. We were moving away unfortunately and they had been in foster for 18 months. Their daddy had passed away and his partner could no longer care for them. It seemed no one would have this pair that must stay together. We had met them at functions before and just loved them. When we finally went to thier foster home for a visit, they jumped on us and never looked back. It was a match made in Heaven. They were truly meant to be with us forever. Phoenix was so wonderful to bend the rules and allow us to adopt regardless of the fact that we were leaving. Though, we are still involved and stay in touch constantly we all miss them bunches. Annie and Junior were the perfect addition to our flock and are the loves of ur lives as well as all our other fids. We would not live our lives any other way.
