Sun Conures are beautiful, outgoing, and no noisier than a Nanday. They're about the same size and similar personality, so I'd add that to your "let's think about it" list.
I wouldn't personally suggest a Severe Macaw. At least if there is more than one human in the house. They tend to be one-person-only birds, and aren't very tolerant of others than the favored person in their space. They can be aggressive towards the not-favored ones.
U2s are wonderful, snuggly birds. But they have ISSUES (usually). Also, their body language is different from macaws and conures, making them somewhat harder to "read" (eg: Their "I'm really REALLY upset and I'm going to bite you" actions are very similar to their "I'm really happy and/or excited" actions). They're also often known to be rather unpredictable. They are also about as high-maintenence as any bird you could have, except an M2. Don't meet their needs, and they'll pluck, scream, and/or self-destruct. You'll want to research them heavily before deciding whether or not they're right for your family.
