Question Wood Stoves??

As I've been posting with many questions, , our family is going to be staying with my in-laws for about a month or so. I've been trying to think of where the best room in their house is to have the birds, and by far the best room would be their den where my husband will be working on his computer during the day so they'll be with him a lot, it's out of the way so they can sleep at night, and has lots of sunlight and warmth. However, the room does have a wood burning stove. Does anyone know if these are ok for the birds to be around??

Also, any extra tips on having your fids be houseguests? We've asked nicely (nothing like feeling like a demanding guest ) that they not use teflon, candles, or spray anything around the birds. My mother-in-law uses perfume, but that should be ok as long as she doesn't put it on near them right? Can't wait to be able to bird proof our own new place and get settled in after all the holidays!

if the wood stove is properly vented, and they only use real wood(not duraflame logs) there will be no problem. Just know it can get very warm in the room with it on. I had a wood buring stove and used it as a heat source all winter long. my house was under 700 sq ft. It was a log cabin in the woods. The birds, all 17 did fine.

I'll let the others talk aobut the house guest things,,,

Lisa, Are duraflame logs bad for them? How about Presto logs?

The fumes can kill them. Only use real wood, and wood thats not wet...that will smoke more. Also the new ventless fireplaces that people have in homes, are fueled by a gel in a can. That too can be deadly.

Thanks Lisa! I'm glad you brought up the Duraflame logs...since I don't have a wood stove, I wouldn't have thought of that. Good to know!

So are fireplaces ok, too? We have the duraflame logs and real wood. I haven't used the fireplace since I got them cause I was afraid too. But an I use it as long as I use real wood?

yes, a fireplace is ok...make sure to have it checked and cleaned so it vents the smoke outside like its designed to.
I have had fireplaces in all my homes growing up. we used them continoulsy. I had birds all that time also. Using a woodburning stove, or fireplace in the country is just something ya have to do. I never once had a problem, but we only burned dry wood. not green, and not wet. not any man made material. It was actually my job to split the wood and carry it in. My father didnt give me that job, however the first husband thought it was a good job for me..thus a nother good reason I *split* from him

Also...when the stove is on, or fire burning, BIRDS ARE TO BE KEPT IN THE CAGE.
this is two fold.
one: so they cant get hurt,
two: in the event you have to evacuate quickly!
