I saw those amazons... can someone report that picture and asked that it be removed on terms of ABUSE?! That is sick, plain and simple. If its a rescue, they should be in better housing conditions then when they arrived, period.
Heck... I might even go send off an email myself... while putting a vote in for Max :)

Hello,

I was browsing through the photos for the Extremem Bird Cage Makeover Contest and found this entry- http://www.birdchannel.com/bird-maga...er&page=&sid=&

the two amazons, named Rico and Hola, owned by Kate. The cage is small, filthy, rusty, unsuitable for even one bird, let alone two. No perches or toys are avialable to these birds in this photo. The description of the photo says that the birds 'are being housed at a parrot rescue facility, without toys or perches available to them.'

I find this extremely disturbing. Using the fact that the birds are in deplorable conditions to win a new cage, rescue facility or not, is underhanded. If the birds are indeed in a rescue facility, the facility should be providing the birds with perches and toys, and increase the quality of life as much as possible considering the housing circumstances. I do fostering and have seen many a bird come through with less then healthy housing conditions before, and not one bird has ever been subjected to staying in those conditions when in the care of the new owner.

I am asking that this photo be removed from the contest- this is not only putting out a bad image for parrot rescues, but a bad image for parrot owners, and potential owners as well.

I sent it to the email the offered for support... lets see what the response is.

Thank you for your response! I was really really upset by those two amazons.
Not only the cage but it looks like they are being held in a windowless shed or something like that. It just made me sick! If I saw those birds like that with a regular owner I would be pounding on the door with Animal Control at my side! For those birds to be in a supposed rescue just irks me so bad. I will write a letter also. That was a good idea.
Lynda

There are many people that would help these birds if there was a true need and not just a greedy rescue.

My wife and I love birds but do not take kindly to people that can not take care of them. If someone has a bird they can not take care of it should go to another home or rescue. I feel there are many rescues out there just looking for money to do others things with rather than bird care.

Yes, we support Lynda and everything she is doing!

Did the letter work? When I follow the listed link, I see one bird standing there--no pix of cages or another bird....

No response yet. The pictures change peridiocally based on voting status, so that may be why the link is not correct.
It just angers me to no end that those people took the time to take a photo, post it on the internet, in a contest none the less, but the birds have no toys or perches. If a bird came to me in that kind of cage- the FIRST thing I would do would be to powerwash the crap out of that thing, then supply the poor things with some perches. Thats why I never have any before pics of cages.. I dont take the time to pull out the camera first!
If the rescue name was listed... I would be looking them up and questioning their code of conduct.

I joined the message board on the Bird Channel and asked if anyone knew where the birds were to please contact me. Not that I want to get the supposed rescue in trouble but that I wanted to get some perches to the birds and maybe find someone who can rescue them from the rescue.

I don't know about the support email address. I sent two posts trying to find out why my bird club was not listed ( since it is listed in BirdTalk) and how to get my club listed and they have never replied.

I will be hunting around for another email address to send it to as a backup. I know the former moderator of BirdChannel forums (used to be BirdTalk) so I am sure that person can shoot me in the right direction. Let me go send off a PM...

Nothing yet. I sent out a request for an email for someone over at BT, as well as posting in on the forums over there about the birds condition.
http://board.birdchannel.com/Topic13....aspx?Update=1
I also posted in response to the thread you started, Lynn, asking for a contact to someone on BirdChannel so that the picture may be removed.

Thank you! It worked and they pulled the picture yesterday and changed the contest rules. Good job! ( high five!)

Now if we could just find out where those poor birds are!
