Exclamation Red Rump Parakeet help

Does anyone know anything about these birds? First alittle history. I adopted this male 2 years ago and at that time he had been somewhat ignored but would perch on your finger if he had to. He eventually would allow me to scratch his head but runs away when you go near him with your finger. When I got him, I had a canary, Dino, and my beloved chocolate lab, Jack and Cesar (the parakeet) would happily spend his time playing with his toys and trying to engage the canary and when he got tired of that he would find Jack and peck at him. Well the canary and my dog just died and the bird is obviously distressed with nothing to do. I have moved him into my office so that I am in his sight for longer periods but I feel I should probably get him another bird or I have to adopt him out so he can be happy. Can someone tell me what kind of bird would be best to get for him? I have been all over the internet to try and get info about him and they say he will kill a weaker or lesser bird. I want him to be happy but I cannot stay in my office all day every day. Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks, Christie

I'm sorry for your loss; how hard to lose two of your "kids" so close together. Any reason not to get another of the same breed? Or a couple of canaries? I am guessing everyone sleeps in their own cages, so would only be physically interacting when you could supervise ? Depending on where you live, there are often birds at animal shelters or with rescue organizations that need a good home, so you may be able to do a good deed and get Cesar some new friend(s) at the same time?!

Are you in Australia? Just taking a guess as red rumps are much more common here than in the States. They are very agressive with other birds so it is best to keep them with their own kind. If you don't want to breed, you can get one of the same sex. They are known more as aviary birds than interactive compansion birds.

I am in Washington CT, in the states. I cannot go back to having 2 separate cages and 2 different types of birds. To much for me to take care of at this stage of my life. Will this type of bird accept another male and can they be caged together? I don't mind taking care of them, but need to have it more controlled so can keep up on the maintenance not to mention his happiness. Is there an adoption org in CT?

Try http://www.geocities.com/ctbirdrescue/rescue.html or www.petfinder.com. Also, can check with your local humane society, they may know of local resue organizations. Good luck!

Ive got two pairs of red rumps in a large 4 metre aviary. I probably wouldnt put two males together, but would a male/female match. My two pairs squabble if their paths cross. They dont seemto bother the other birds in the aviary. They are housed with canaries, finches, burkes, turks and quales. They only argue with each other. But not constantly. Im looking at separating the pairs as soon as I get my new aviary. I currently have the hens both rearing chicks and fairly close to each other. They all seem to get on ok, but for example if I go in there and unsettle everyone, I can see them have a spit at each other.

In a small cage I wouldnt house two males. If you lived a little closer i could give you one of my babies lol.

To all that answered, thank you. Fortunately for Cesar I have found him a new home with an experienced birder with 9 other birds for him to play with. While talking to a manager at Petco who is the bird expert there about what type of bird could be suitable to cage Cesar with, she stated that she would not cage a "grasskeet" with any other bird. I had said that I would then need to adopt him out so he could be happy. She said "I'll take him." So this is the end of my birding for now. Just wanted to say "Farewell"!
