Galatiel

Galatiel

Is this for real? I've wondered about it since I read it some time ago. If the bird in the pic is really a hybrid that's kinda neat. It's awfully cute.

Re: Galatiel

I saw this a few months ago and thought it was wild. Hybreds do happen in the wild with almost all types of animals but it is very rare.

Re: Galatiel

It makes me think about aquiring a male Galah and giving it a try. My tiel keeps showing us her behind.

The article for more information on the first breeding of a Galatiel can be found here:
Talking Birds - Australia's Avian Newspaper

While I think that they are indeed very pretty birds - it also kind of disturbs me as far as the gene pool and ethics goes.... Is that wrongfully so?

It's an interesting combination of species.
The specimen is unique for sure- but as radical the idea is, it's an affair the birds decided on, not the breeder. He didn't have the Galah in there so it would deliberately produce a hybrid.
I appreciate all the species we have all come to know & love, but I have nothing against hybrids.
IMO, a Galatiel is nothing worse or any more extreme than some of the other strange creatures that have appeared in the wild.

Hmmmm, since recent DNA mapping shows that Cockateils are distantly related to the Black Palm 'Too, I wonder if the species gap is too wide for that Galatiel to be reproductively viable though.

Yes, this bird does exist and several members of Parrot Society have seen him. It was an accidental breeding, they all were sharing a large aviary. He's a gorgeous little guy, I would like to see him in person some day.
