Communication Skills and Stories

Many people have parrots that don't have the natural ability to talk. This has to do with parrots that can't or won't talk. It has nothing to do with teaching a bird to speak human words :)

So, how did you like learning about your parrot's non human communication skills even though it wasn't done with human speech? ???

Did you feel that barriers were suddenly lessening ? ???

Did you discover or see the many different types of *body language* that your parrot was capable of? ???

Are you still unhappy that your parrot doesn't talk in human words? ???

Do you now place less importance on your parrot not being able to talk in human words? ???

Did you feel closer to your parrot when you discovered his/her natural communication with you or the family? ???

If you like, share your stories and or opinions with others. Never can tell, it might be helpful. Serious or light hearted answers will be appreciated by all. SO, LET IT ALL HANG OUT!!!!! ;) 8) ;)

I hope you all enjoy sharing this adventure into the world of communication with others-------Dave

Re: Communication Skills and Stories

I have several talking birds and my CAG is my best talker as far as the number of things he says. My quaker, Moochie aka motor mouth, is my best talker in context. The best way to teach a bird to talk is talking to them. Normal conversation about what you are doing or want them to do is the best way to teach them to speak in context. Moochie will immediately stop what she is saying if another bird says something. She doesn't want them "stepping on her lines". :D

So, how did you like learning about your parrot's non human communication skills even though it wasn't done with human speech? I enjoyed it, it was like charades. I can tell when my babies want me to put them to bed, I know when they think they deserve a treat, and I know when they want their water changed.

Did you feel that barriers were suddenly lessening ? Hmm by not having to worry about my bird talking? No, then again, I never felt any barriers -- I always just accepted that my bird will be my bird and they'll let me know in due time what type of personality they have

Did you discover or see the many different types of *body language* that your parrot was capable of?
Oh yes, Like my baby boy will climb to the bottom of the cage and flap his little wings kicking up all the feathers ect when he wants new water (Even if I've already changed it) Or They'll hang from the side of their cage, and start biting the cage when it's bedtime, and they'll fly and hover right in front of my face when it's time for a treat.

Are you still unhappy that your parrot doesn't talk in human words?
No, not at all
Do you now place less importance on your parrot not being able to talk in human words?

Did you feel closer to your parrot when you discovered his/her natural communication with you or the family? A little bit, I felt more like I had finally "Gotten" It when I could read their little body language

So, how did you like learning about your parrot's non human communication skills even though it wasn't done with human speech? When I first got my U2 I would sit for hours just watching her. She was very fearfull of people And I had to earn her trust before anything.

Did you feel that barriers were suddenly lessening ? Never. It made our bond stronger.

Did you discover or see the many different types of *body language* that your parrot was capable of? After her and I made our bond she was the most easiest bird to read I knew what she was thinking and she knew exactly what I was feeling or thinking.

Are you still unhappy that your parrot doesn't talk in human words? [color=redNever unhappy with my birds.[color=red]

Do you now place less importance on your parrot not being able to talk in human words?Absolutely not she is my best friend.

Did you feel closer to your parrot when you discovered his/her natural communication with you or the family? You bet I did!!

Re: Communication Skills and Stories

Sorry, Dave, I did misunderstand.

Now, about the body language of non talking birds. My OWA does not talk, but I know exactly what he wants. Of course the pinning of the eyes is a major clue to not touch him. He holds his body a certain way when he wants to get on my shoulder and raises his wings when he wants a spray bath.

Is that what you mean, Dave?

Jane

First of all, it wasn't your fault. I should have been more detailed. No one's perfect ;). Hmmm, Now that I think of it, hmmm? Oh well

Now as far as what you said about your parrot, yes that's what I meant and I'll bet you have more things that you know about concerning your non-talking bird so if you look at my original post and you'd like to add more, then feel free to do that. Everything is welcome. PS, I just came back from confession and nothing was added on to my punishment-----------Dave

Its been very fun and intersting. I feel much better now that I know what she's trying to tell me.

Did you feel that barriers were suddenly lessening ? Absolutely. Now I can usually guess what she wants and I get bit a lot less.

Did you discover or see the many different types of *body language* that your parrot was capable of? Yes, for example, if I ask her if she wants a bath, she'll poof up and start chirping if yes. If no, she ignores the question. She'll also start making quite a racket if she wants food or her water changed. She's very affectinate.

Are you still unhappy that your parrot doesn't talk in human words? She talks when she feels like it, but I think I would love her even if she didn't talk.

Do you now place less importance on your parrot not being able to talk in human words? It amazes me every time she talks. She knows what she's saying (or at least the general idea behind it).

Did you feel closer to your parrot when you discovered his/her natural communication with you or the family? Definitely. Knowing her "signs" has really helped.
