New sun conure and parrotlett

Hi everyone, I am sorry I have not been around much, but have visited occasionally to keep up. tonight I brought home a sun conure and parrotlett tha have been together for 8 years, but neglected. the conure is semi tame but the little guy was only bought to be a companion to him and never interacted with, which I cannot understand!
anyway I am thrilled as I have been thinking about one or both of these birds for awhile, I even have another sun baby being weaned for me now, won't come home until mid Jan though.
I wnated to ask about the parrotlett, is it too late to try and train him? Or at least tame him a bit? And how would I start? they both seem to be in good heath altough I did have my doubts as I got them both for free along with thier huge cage, which was filthy!! I have scrubbed it 2 x's and it still looks dirty!! I ran out of poop o so will have to get some more and try again.
I guess I need advice on training, fave toys of other conures and parrotletts, general advice.
thanks and hope everyone here has wonderful holidays and welcome to the new comers I have not yet met.
thanks everyone!
Laura

Re: New sun conure and parrotlett

Parrotlets are flighty little things and can get under and behind things. When you get him out, take him to a small room like the bathroom (make sure the lid is down on the stool.) or to a hall and work on step ups. A good wing clip is a must. He will still be able to fly, but not get lift and soar away from you. One on one time and a huge amount of patience will be required.

I have 8 Parrotlet babies right now from 2 clutches. I just love them.

Re: New sun conure and parrotlett

I never had a parrotlet but my lovies loved snuggly beds and coconut bed rooms, and big bell hanging toys. The cocunuts where whole with a hole cut out and painted and had various shaped mineral bone on the outside. the bell was made up of wooden dowls and large with an actual bell inside and small colored balls on it. they would all love to sit and swing on it. Good luck and I look foward to lots'a pics.

Laura I would start these two birds out in their own seperate cages, it's never a good idea to have a smaller bird housed with a bigger one. Good luck with them and keep us posted.
