Re: Hawkhead parrot
Thanks, Chico is a very cool little bird.
he loves to be on my shoulder all the time. he meows like a cat and woof, woof likes a dog. he is such a joy. Chico is 5 years old and loves attention. chico was housed in a downstairs room for about a year with 2 blue and gold macaws. he does not blue and golds at all. he became a feather picker and was very nervous. we are very slowly getting feathers back. will get more updated photos of him , so you can see what he looks like now. thanks donna from keizer |

Re: Hawkhead parrot
Sometimes, convincing Hawkheads to eat a variety of food is extremely difficult. Wild-caught Hawkheads will often eat only fruit and dry seeds, sometimes narrowing their choice to only one type of food. Such behavior will prevent a bird from eating a nutritionally complete diet.
But even the most stubborn bird will respond to patience on its keepers part. Offer large amounts of a wide variety of fruits and vegetables to approximate the extensive selection available to Hawkheads in the wild. It may take a long time to get wild-caught individuals to sample different domestic foods, even fruits and vegetables. I forgot whether you said he was wild caught or not. You may have to feed dry seeds only in the late evening to force the birds to consume other foods during the day. Hawkheads generally like apples, pears, melons, bananas, berries, oranges, raisins, corn, peas, carrots, cooked soybeans (and other beans), brown rice, cornbread, whole wheat bread, oatsand barley. they also enjoy germinated seeds. Choose dry seed mixtures that include parakeet and finch-type seeds, such as millet and canary seed or even Cockatiel mix. Normally, I don't agree with this but in the case of a hawkhead, you should either omit sunflower and safflower seeds from a Hawkhead's diet or feed these seeds sparingly. If offered the choice, many Hawkheads will eat only these seeds, excluding all other foods. Domestic Hawkheads are much easier to feed a varied diet compared to the wild-caught ones. Hopes this helps. It's been aa while since my buddy and I dealt with them.------Dave |

Re: Hawkhead parrot
I have raised Hawk Heads for several years. I find them to be wonderful birds. I introduce mine to a large variety of foods. I do not feed pellets. They need nuts and seeds in their diet. I feed almonds every day. All of my birds look for their almond before they eat the rest of their food. Oh, yes, they love pomegranates. This is the season to buy poms. I buy and freeze them for my Hawk Heads and other birds. Not sure if this helps, but I hope it does. Andrea
