Ebay has a lot of vendors that sell bird safe rope. I use the following:

White cotton rope: choose cotton over synthetics. If the bird should become entangled, they can chew threw cotton.

Sisal: be sure its not treated with petroleum products. Give it the "sniff" test. If it smells like oil, don't use it.

Paulie Rope: this is a polypropalene (sp) product that has a hollow core. Its very bird friendly and easy to work with.

Also look for Supreme Cotton rope. I buy it a lot, but it gets pretty pricey. I've been told it's extremely safe for birds. Not sure the statistics, does anyone know? I wouldn't mind switching to plain cotton rope for it would make a lot of my toys more affordable, but have just been leary to make the switch.

Lara, I believe they're both very safe, but the difference with the Supreme is that it's edible and pulls apart easier than the plain Cotton rope, thus eliminating strangling toes.

There's also a new 3/16" Paulie rope available now for the bigger bird toys. I remember reading something about a company change and the Paulie rope is also better priced now.

Hey there Karen. Good to talk to you again. I have some of the larger Paulie Rope and I hate it. I bought a spool to try, but it's harder to get the pony beads on and it doesn't make a tight knot. I suppose harder to get pony beads onto means, longer time for Rico to take them off. I'll have to give it another shot tomorrow.

Lara have you ever tried tying a knot with the Paulie rope, then heating the knot with a lighter or match a little bit to melt it together? I've seen my husband do this with a plastic type ropes for work. I wonder if it would work with the Paulie rope to keep a knot tight?

We use Poly rope when making Hoopballs. Otherwise we use cotton. I don't like sisal simply because it hurts my hands.
