Dead Zoos. Yuk. No taxidermied "specimens" allowed here at Collie Capers.

but why would you need to havbe a permit to buy a stuffed bird?
I don't know all the details of the endangered species laws, but they generally prohibit trade in live animals and anything made from parts of those animals like fur, skin, tusks, etc. This is to prevent people from killing endangered animals for their body parts, which is what put a lot of the animals on the endangered species list in the first place. Selling a stuffed and mounted animal would certainly fall into the prohibited category if you're not allowed to sell a live member of that same species.

Trade in CITES Appendix 2 species is allowed and is pretty broad. Although, I'm not sure it always applies to animal "parts" or "preserved" specimens. I suppose "stuffed" animals might qualify under preserved. CITES Appendix 1 species are totally restricted and adults MAY NOT be exported or traded from their native country in whole or in part. I'm not totally familiar with the animal side of things, but I am with plants. Appendix 1 plants may be exported and sold from their native countries provided they are seed-raised, nursery-grown plants and have the proper documentation and paperwork. But believe me, people find ways to get wild-collected species out of their countries of origin everyday as "nursery-grown" propagations. Paperwork is easy to forge.
