A Bird Named 'Mouth'

Not too long ago I met a bird named Mouth. A zon he is, that has lived in his current home since '87 they say. With that in mind, supposedly he was kept by two woman who used to abuse him, but I can't say he's much better off now than he was before... In all the years they've had him, they really haven't tried working with him... He's so terrified of hands that he not only refuses to step up, but he also tries to get away... and even with full flights, he can only fly downwards... He's not on the best of diets, but he DOES get some fresh foods... They're not particularly interested in giving him up (guess he WAS a $700 bird) so I only hope to better educate the owners and help them help Mouth...

Here's the cage, and most of the items I was able to get him (hubby doesn't like cage I guess, since he says it's smaller... he's right... but just wait)

The cage has a playtop, seed guards (needs some nuts n bolts to keep it in place) and Mouth seems quite confused about the bottom...

Of course then again, he may not be used to actual perches like the ones in the cage (manzanita sanded down)...

Of course since I'm not afraid to handle him, I DID get some bites (I was the one who toweled him out of his old cage, and put him in his new one... as well as forcing him to get a shower.... imagine an 18 year old girl, as well as a 21 and 25 year old men, all of whom were bitten... guess who was the only one who DIDN'T scream or make a peep even when they got bitten???)

In the end though, hopefully it's OUT with the old and IN with the new! With this cage, at least there is a door to let him out of, the tray for the playgym comes out, as well as the top of the cage (which is also a grate you could say), they can more easily keep him fed and watered without bites or problems getting into the cage... I don't have any high hopes, but at least if they ARE willing to work with him, maybe he'll get some actual out of cage time, and maybe (but not likely) will tame down...

I was only able to get these items to Mouth just yesterday (Monday) even though I've had them for over a month now... reason why, is because I do not have much contact with the family, and all previous times I've gone over there (before Monday), no one would answer the door... I guess I can only hope for the best!

God bless you for caring for Mouth. He's pretty -- hope to see progress made with time and patience.

I really do hope the family will turn around and better care for Mouth... at least that is my hope! The last image is of his old cage, which I can show close ups of the areas he chewd up, as well as the bottom of the cage, so to speak... I'd have to say that it was only about 1' from front to back of that cage... The one I brought over to him is about 22" x 18" x 36"??? maybe. I didn't really measure it out.

Oh, and just as a side note, I saw an add today for a "small concore". I called the add for some info (NO I'm not looking to add to the birds!) and then was told that it was a 'small macaw' or that it was related to them or something! And that it was green grey and red... When I first saw the add, I thought it might be a green cheek or similar... I told the owner that if he'd like, I'd go over and identify the bird for him... and sure enough, it was a green cheek! He really loves his little "Rosy", so much so that he realises that he isn't in the most ideal situation to care for him/her (1 dog that is learning to be a 'help dog', wife supposedly allergic to bird, they travel a lot, and bird and dog don't get along!). I didn't ask for their price, but rather mentioned that they should probably try going through the local bird club to sell their little birdy.

Kudos to you, Monica! Maybe if you become a constant visitor at the house to play with Mouth, they will eventually give you the poor darling.

I could hope that! So in that way, I can find an appropriate home for Mouth! But sadly, since this family seems to be so much about money, and him supposedly being a 'family pet', I doubt it!

Next step is actually having SOMEONE answer the door when I stop by! And maybe take Mouth in somewhere to get his nails done... Figured flights too, but after seeing him 'fly', it's not worth it to get his wings done too... Doesn't really help though that the son doesn't THINK they are abusing him in any way, since supposedly he's living better there than his previous place... knowing the 'law', and my own opinions, I begged to differ...

I'm not sure if it is the picture or not, but his feathers in the one picture look awful. I wonder what type of diet they are feeding the poor baby. Do they even take him out? Stuff like this breaks my heart. He's probably a source of amusement for them and nothing more. You should ask them if they consider him to be a family member. Then ask how they would feel if they were locked in a room, never to be let out. I wonder how they would respond.

It's not "just the picture", that's how he really looks... at least that was before the bath.... ain't got none after he dried off (left before that). Diet? Would you really honestly like to know? That crap they sell at Walmart advertised for 'parrots'. Good containers that I like to use, but I REFUSE to use the actual product itself...

I doubt Mouth has been taken out very often... maybe once in a blue moon... but with this new cage, I'm hoping that they (or somebody) would let him out more often... he can't even fly!
