Training Methods Which One??

I want to start training our B & G,
I have been looking at this website by a Guy named Chet Womack
He has a Method which is video's and DVD I think,
Anybody here used this and What do you think?
His Website really promotes it, and you really have to scroll and read
to get to the part to order, but it looks like the price is 47$ + 10 for shipping
no too bad I guess
Any thoughts?

Thanks
Dave

I think that his methods seems to be good. From my perspective his way of training birds is the right way. He ask the bird to do something and he rewards it when it does. No punishment just rewards. It can also be easier to have seen someone who's well known with training birds when you first start.

IMO, Chet Womach puts too much time and effort in promoting his DVD's, especially his latest about revealing bad pet stores and how to choose a healthy pet bird from one... I'm not saying his methods are bad, or that his training courses are, I just think that he puts FAR too much time in trying to sell YOU his DVD's...

Here's a quote from his last one...
Quote:
So watch as we leave exit our safe house, barrel over cliffs in our chopper, and swim through shark infested waters to try to reach the CIA communications post in time. (think I'm kidding ... we really do swim with sharks in this video)
To me, I thought the video was pretty lame... not only for the fact that they 'secret agent style' ran out of a warehouse, and entered a helicopter (even if it belongs to them, do you know how expensive fuel is???), and the swimming with sharks... They try to make you think something along the lines that these sharks are dangerous, when in reality they are "minimally dangerous" since white tipped reef sharks are hardly even known to attack a human.

Please, understand, that I'm not saying that he has bad videos, as I'm sure many people have learned some GREAT info from him and his brother, and he DOES have informative e-mails that he sends out from time to time... All I'm saying is that they put a lot of time and effort in trying to sell you these videos, and I just don't like their sales tactics. Someone did once point out though that there were several different stories about different birds, however the stories were the exact same other than a change of bird name and species.

Least bit, Kim Bear, a cockatoo expert and behavoirist recommends him and his videos.

If you want to learn the proper way of training, pick up the video sold at www.goodbirdinc.com its the first training DVD in the series. Chet Womach uses flooding techniques and other adversive techniques that can actually teach your bird bad behavior in the long run. Mattie Sue Athan is also a good resource for learning the correct way to train your companion parrot.

I also recommend Barbara Heidenreich.

I agree, you may get a quick fix, but IMO you break trust by forcing and flooding.

That's right. These techniques can quickly get you a bird who is obedient. They may even produce a bird who loves you, but it won't be a healthy kind of love. This is called the Stockholm Syndrome when it happens in humans, and it's basically the way Patty Hearst joined the Symbionese Liberation Army. A victim offers love and allegiance to an oppressor in order to escape any further abuse, and there's a really high potential for long-term problems.

Clicker training for birds is completely based on positive reinforcement and building trust. There's an excellent book on the subject at http://www.amazon.com/Clicker-Traini...dp/1890948152/

I don't know anything about it, but it reads an awful lot like a Chet Womach ad so it might be him in disguise. I'm deeply distrustful of any product that uses that much hype and promises instant or nearly instant results, because it's usually a scam. You can learn just as much for free by going to the nearest library and checking out a few parrot-care books published within the last ten years.

Or get a subscription to Bird Talk magazine. They have excellent, informative articles on a wide range of subjects including trick training, and if you order online at http://www.birdchannel.com/bird-maga...k/default.aspx a 12-month subscription costs only $14. It's the biggest bird-related bargain I know of.

One major factor that might prevent your Parrot from talking... and the simple things that you should do in order to avoid this. (See Page 6)...

Strategic phone placement tips... Discover why it can be SO important for you to put your telephone somewhere near your Parrot's cage, but be careful... (See Page 6)...

Training warnings... Once your Parrot starts talking, you may have an undesired critic that gets you in hot water, not a fun chatter! (See Page 6)...

How to use the audio tapes and CDs that you may already own to teach your Parrot to speak, and when they are most effective. (See Page 7)...

Real communication, not just "Bird" talk... How you will be able to amaze your friends and your family by teaching your Parrot to say "I want a grape" every time it wants to have a grape!
Sounds like a load of BS to me...
