beak-freeze

Hi, i wanted to see what others have experienced with feeding your birds a frozen treat.

i occasionally treat my birds to a nibble of my frozen fruit juice popcicle (sugar free). i find that my conures love it and crunch happily on the pieces of soft fruity ice. my amazon, on the other hand, shakes his head as soon as his beak touches the ice pop. he seems to get "beak-freeze" instantly and won't touch the stuff.

is this a species this? individual bird thing? what do you observe with your birds?

thanks,

kate

Hmmm All of my macaws love peach ice cream and so did my ekkie. Not sure about the greys and amazon, for I don't think I offered any to them. My quaker has a damaged beak so I don't think we'll try any on him. Probably just a bird to bird thing. I will say this, however, I have always heated their Kitchen sink dinner and they won't touch it unless its warm.

My nanday Zorro will hold an ice cube in his foot and lick a hole in it. I used to worry he was going to get frost bite. All my birds love fruit pops. Summertime brings ice cubes with grapes inside. My cockatoos crunch them up!

Miro HATES cold things- he touches them with his beak, then jerks his head back and gives us a look that says "What are you trying to do to me?"

It depends with ours--all of them like frozen yogurt or ice cream, but none of them seem to like other frozen stuff.

I always put the frozen veggies I am serving into their bowls frozen. They don't wait for them to thaw - they will usually go right over to them and start eating them. My BF's B&G macaw will eat the ice cubes right out of his glass.

I had a Quaker that use to love to chew on ice cubes ... never seen any detrimental effects from it. He probably would have stopped if it got uncomfortable. He'd snag them out of my glass when the drink was gone, and fly back to the top of his cage and crunch on them.

My two Princesses will dive into the frozen corn kernels the minute I give it to them. The Tiels and Chaska wait a bit, sometimes Chaska will go for it but she really prefers it thawed.
