Boarding the bird

OK, long story short, I'm moving on Thursday. Movers are coming Thursday morning, but I may not be able to move to my new house until friday. So, the builders are paying for my stuff to be held at the movers overnight, and for a hotel for me. I was going to take the bird, but thought about what I've read on here about hotels, so I decided to board him at his vets. They said it would be to stressful on him moving, and having people in & out. The vet said they play with them, and he'll be with other birds, and they give him fruit and veggies. I feel better about him now, but I'll miss him.

Any opinions on my decision would be appreciated, good or bad.

I think it's a good thing to do it that way... especially since he's been there before, and isn't going to watch "his" environment being changed by strangers. And since it's only for a short time, I think it's the best you can do.
Good luck with your move!

I agree. Its winter and a lot of things can go wrong during a move. He'll do just fine.

Well he'll be with a vet, so I think that's the safest bet for you. If anything were to go wrong, your vet would handle the bird. You have a good time by yourself for once.

It sounds like he'll do fine.

The only other suggestion I can think of is to keep him at a friend or family member's house for the day. Just a thought.

Good luck with your move.

Thanx guys. I feel good that he's going to the vet. I'm bringing there on Wednesday, and Hopefully picking him up on Sat. But if I can't get him Sat, then I'll have to wait till Monday.

Do ya think he'll forget me....

no, he won't... he might give you a strange look when you first walk in, but that wears off pretty quickly.
when i went to a conference in the middle of nov, valo stayed with a friend, and he was fine. first, he gave me a "where the h$%& have you been?"-look followed by a quick snuggle... once we were back home, he was all the same and enjoyed the hour-long head scritches he got (go figure, i probably missed him more than he me )

I think he'll be fine. YOU, on the other hand ... ;) (I hate moving).

Seriously though, when I go up to my Mother in Law's house, I have to board the birds. She lives in a log cabin heated solely by a woodstove, on a mountainside. It's COLD there in the mornings and at night. Just not a good place for the fids.

When we come home, as soon as we get them in their carrier, they start contact calling us as loudly as they can. And when they get back to their regular big cage (I have to use a smaller cage for boarding, the big one doesn't break down very easily) hooooooboy do they ever have fun! They ping around inside their cage, play with all their toys, then come out and surf us until our shirts are in tatters.

He's going to be just fine, and I think you're making a very smart move to board him during the craziness of moving. And that's not even taking into account someone thinking they might just steal an "expensive parrot".

Didn't think about someone stealing him....good point.

Well, while he's living it up at the vet, I'll be cozy in a nice hotel...hopefully only for 1 night, but if more, they are paying anyway.
