New picts of Tink

Updated pictures of Tinkerbell....

As you may all recall I purchased her from a breeder at 6 weeks old and I have been hand feeding her which scared many people on this board due to the fact I have never hand fed a bird before. However, she is growing and I am learning and all is well. Newest picts are last since I wanted to repost her at 6 and 7 weeks old. She is now 9 weeks old.

I do have a question in all of this... My family and I will be driving to our house in Oregon for Xmas. Is it OK to take her with us since she will still probably not be weaned? Will a road trip hurt her in any way? If so, I would probably cancel my trip and stay here (Vegas) to take care of her.

Wow! You've done a great job rearing this little one! Many birds travel very well, but Tink is still pretty young to take a long trip like a Vegas to Oregon run. My thought is you are better off to wait til Spring as the weather can be pretty severe and long delays are a strong possibility. Missing a single feeding might be ok, but more than that might cause problems. Plus there's the whole car sick thing, bad hotel rooms, etc. Once she gets a little older, say a good four months or so, I think you should start with small trips around town and see how she reacts. Dont' forget to get a good strong travel cage with good openings on the side so Tink can see out. We use a small animal size carrier (rodent/hamster size) which works well for a cockatiel. You can evaluate her then and see if you can have a Travelin' Bird. My Buster loves her travel cage and has a blast when we go anywhere but she's only been on short trips so I don't know how she would react to 500 miles plus.

you are doing an awesome job with your bird. she is so beautiful!

i would also be careful about driving to oregon with your baby fid. from the looks of things, its already pretty snowy in oregon. and like bustersbuddy mentioned, not only do you have to worry about delays, traffic, weather, feeding, etc, some birds just get car sick. one of my green cheeks gets so car sick that only after a few minutes of driving he bobs his head to vomit. :( so the only time i take him anywhere is if he needs to go to the vet. poor guy.

About 17 hours. We would probably stop for the night somewhere along the way if we took her. Otherwise I typically drive straight through. I might add that 1 day after I got her she went for a 5 hour road trip to my Calif house. She seemed to do fine for being only 6 weeks old.

You know how OR is--dry and either too d*** cold or too d*** hot depending on the season for 3/4 of the state, or fairly mild and wet at this time of the year for the coast and Willamette Valley. I'm guessing it depends on where you're going, when you're leaving, where you're staying, the road conditions on the way, how long it's going to take to get to your destination, how many mt. ranges you're crossing on your way (what happens if your car breaks down on the way? How will you and the baby stay warm, take care of his handfeeding, etc.?), the condition of your vehicle, the set-up you have for your baby during travel, how you're packing the formula, etc.

Kinda scary, once you think of it, huh? :-).

For the next couplea days, the entire state is supposed to be fairly dry, and the temps vary by location (frigid east, merely cold or chilly in the west).

Now I'm curious where you live, as I'm a native Oregonian myself, and I dearly love this state :-).

I have a vacation home in Sister's which you may know is right out side of Bend. I make this trip several times a year and I only drive since the whole family goes. Where in Oregon are you?

There are portable brooders if one is needed... however I wouldn't know what you could do if you had to heat up some water for the formula, unless you make the necessary stops to get some when formula is needed. I've heard of people doing these trips with chicks in tow, so it is possible. Can't say for sure though if I'd recommend it as I've never done this before with young birds...

Good to see that Tinks growing and that all is well!
