I wonder if people who run reputable rescues or have birds in shelters have the option to do what Oregon Humane Society and local as well as national shelters do with dogs--they transport and switch them around to areas of the state or country where their particular breed is more desirable. Here, the local "pounds" send their best dogs to OHS, who then either adopt them out or send them to another shelter where they might be more desirable there than here. I know that a lot of hound dogs make their way here from the South, where apparently those that don't do well as hunting dogs are frequently shot or abandoned. Around here, the little dogs are worth their weight in platinum. A lot of Katrina dogs found new homes here, too, due to coordinated efforts by many people. Couldn't bird rescues and shelters coordinate regionally and nationally and do something similar? Around here, lots of people love the little quakers and nandays, and since they don't seem to establish themselves in the wild, here (our climate is not conducive), they're not considered pests by the local governments, and are legal to sell, trade and purchase, here.

I imagine the logistics of coordination and transportation would be complicated, but heck, if the dog people can do it, I don't see why the bird people can't!

Excellent news as I would want the new Nanday to get along with Chaska.

It is not all tropical birds. Conures and quakers seem to be hardier then the average bird and more adaptable. Quakers because they build there own nest. In fact Florida is not the only place with wild quakers. You can see them in Brooklyn, Chicago, Conneticut, Texas, Lousianna and small flocks in various other places. I still think that they are doing nothing but filling in a niche that was made by the Carolina Parakeet. The Carolina Parakeet was found all over the US. In fact there were Eastren and Western Parakeets. They were conures and slightly looked like maybe a hybrid jenday.

Lynda
That reminds me, Lynda. How are the wild Quakers doing? I was so upset last year when I heard power companies were killing them. I haven't seen anything this year so I am hoping they are OK?

This is a good idea. Something to discuss with other rescue people from around the country. Maybe when I am at the Parrot Festival in Houston.

I was thinking that once you get the bird disease tested and health checked ( it would have to be to be transported across the country) that the adoption fee for a quaker or nanday would be huge. But then again you can't pick these birds up for fifty dollars or less at a bird expo in your part of the country. Another thing with transport, quakers are illegal in some parts of the US and transportation would have to be worked out to avoid the states where the birds are illegal.

I don't know Tiki. Between trying to run my rescue and being the president-elect of the bird club I have basically had my head in the sand about what is going on in different parts of the country.

FPL still practices quaker managment. But now they do it very quietly because of the stink that has been raised. FPL learned to do there dirty work at night and out of the public eye. In Conneticut I have no idea what is going on but hopefully UI is not going to kill quakers like they did last year. If they do again it will be quietly as not to attract attention.

I've been checking out www.brooklynparrots.com fairly often and haven't seen any killings lately. Thank God!!! Maybe the petition campaign last year actually did some good! I believe there is talk of a new law in NJ to make Quakers legal there too?

Lynda,
What a beautiful nanday. What rescue do you work for and where is it? I live in S. Central Fl. and I would love to come by sometime.

I live in SW Florida and help run a bird rescue. If you live in the Manatee County, Sarasota County area and are looking to adopt a bird please contact me. Along with occasional larger birds we always have cockatiels and quakers looking for good caring homes.

Hmmm... Wonder if somebody's gonna get adopted???

What a beautiful little Bandit. Ever since Sammy stayed with me for the season, I've had a soft spot for Nandays. They have such wonderful personality and are just plain cute.

Joanie, I will never forget Sammy! I just totally fell in love with him and also Lynda's Zorro. They were very convincing ambassadors for their species!
