I am 55 and Will is 56. We figure with any luck at all, we probably have another 20 years. If that happens and I remain well enough to care for them all that time, they will be willed along with the house and an annuity to my granddaugher, Lily. I don't expect her to necessarily keep them, but I do expect her to find good homes for them. I know she loves them and hope that will continue. However, if I die sooner, it becomes more complicated. She won't be old enough and Will surely won't want to keep 10 birds. He would likely only keep one or two. That's another reason I try to educate younger folks about birds. Who knows? Maybe some of you will inherit my darlings.

Candice,
I have thought alot about this. If my husband and I should die suddenly my birds are going to a friend. I have two friends I know would care for them deeply and they both have other birds. The problem is we are all around the same age, ( I know Lisa if you read this, you are alittle younger than me!!!!!!!). But my concern is who will care for them If we all grow old and none of us can care for them...!!!! I have thought about, like the Gabriel Foundation, who would care for them for the rest of there lives. I just don't want them to be put in the wrong hands. My husband and I don't have children, other than our two fid babies, so there isn't anyone much younger . It is a real concern and I am having something put in writing very soon. Whatever I do, there will be an annuity that goes with them for their care and medical needs, if necessary. We do have something in my wallet and the house that states if an emergencey call.......to care for the birds. Hope this helps... but I may have just confused you more. |

It's not just about the human's age--many young people die tragically before their time. I have thought about it too-I have no kids but also have no one to look after my birds if something happened to me suddenly. And I would need some kind of guarantee that the bird's annuity would be used just for them and the human caretaker cant' spend it on themselves. I wish there was a standardized procedure you could sign up for maybe with the RSPCA or whatever. And I wish bequests for pets could be guaranteed legally binding so some cousin doesn't come out of no where and tries to have me declared a whacko and my will set aside.

We really haven't planned for once we're older and potentially can not take care of our pets, we're 22 and 26, so we've got some time there. If something were to suddenly happen to us, we do have a couple friends that would take in our Nanday and our Chinchillas in the event that something were to happen. I have no doubt they would do their best to either continue care for our animals, or find the best possible homes for them. To be honest, that is one of my biggest fears in life, that something will happen to Tim or myself and our pets being the ones to suffer.
