Okay...got the info on it:
It's made out of something called "Quantanium" which is Titanium reinforcing of an aluminum core. They have it on the bed bath and beyond website: http://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/prod...3341648&RN=399

QuanTanium is the first and only of its kind: a multi-coat nonstick with a unique mix of titanium particles blended into each coat.

It is nonstick coated. Basically I read it as teflon with titanium mixed in to prevent scratching. Just be real careful. Don't take it for granted it is birdsafe. I would love to find a safe nonstick coating. So many handy kitchen gadgets I have had to give up because of Teflon. But I am not convinced there is a safe nonstick coating on the market.

It is my understanding (and I have been wrong before :icon_smil ) that teflon at normal cooking teperatures is not a problem but that the problem comes when it is super heated. Such as if you left it on the burner unattended with nothing else in the pan, this would superheat the teflon at which point the fumes given off could be deadly to our birds.

Normal use of teflon products should not be a problem. Just need to be sure that the "normal" stays normal.

I don't think it is only toxic when overheated. The stuff is just bad. I'd avoid it at all costs.

It's the gas produced from heated teflon that is toxic. Normal use of teflon is fine AS LONG AS your birds aren't in any rooms that are immediately off of the kitchen. My bird room is actually where the dining room was, so it has a direct doorway off of the kitchen, so I had to change my ways.
I looked up the elements that teflon is composed of, and the elements of the Quantanium that I have are very different, so I don't think that the same toxic gas will be produced from the heated aluminum/titanium...since the titanium IS the non-stick coating, though when you look at it or feel it, there is no real "coating" to it, nothing like teflon.

I wrote asking the company that makes it if it is safe around birds. I would love to have some if it is safe. My husband really misses the waffle maker, I the electric fry pan. The SS electric fry pan just is not the same. I love my SS pots and pans though. I would not trade them for nonstick even if Teflon was safe.

It is said that the worn teflon and scratched teflon is the most dangerous for humans and animals. Some say that scratched worn teflon does not even need to be over heated to be deadly to your birds. I know people who cooked with teflon for years before one day their birds dropped dead.
I am a good cook, I don't burn things. Is it worth the risk? Not to me!

Are those George Forman grills safe for around birds? Because I remember someone posting that they just got one. I know those have some kind of non stick surface. I am sure it would be the same as a waffle maker right?

I just had a thought:

If it's known that Teflon is a danger to humans, as well as animals, then why is ALMOST EVERY SET OF POTS AND PANS made with it?!? Why don't they take it off the market??

Lyn: if you hear back from them, let me know what they say?? It never hurts to double check :icon_smil

Hi all,

so my boyfriend is a science/physics guy and he did some research on Quantinium and he found the patent info on it... http://patft.uspto.gov/netacgi/nph-P...+AND+cookware)

He said that the ceramic titanium composite known as Quantanium contains tetrafluoroethylene (teflon) in the fluoropolymer resin used as a base.

Quantanium contains polytetrafluoroethylene. tetrafluoroethylene = teflon. It is part of the fluoropolymer resin used to hold the layers together.

This patent http://patft.uspto.gov/netacgi/nph-P...+AND+cookware) defines teflon in the guts of the patent.

So it looks like sticking to stainless steel is the best and safest. Hope this all makes sense :icon_mrgr
