Good info, thanks for the post... questions...
How often do their nails and wings need to be clipped? Also, if you are in an apartment and there is no windows they can see out of (blinds on window) do they have to be clipped? Do they clip in a fasion where you can't tell, like under it's outter wing? About the cage. It makes it hard in my Chico's cage for him to flap his wings. It is 18d x 20w x 23h abd I have a bottom tree-like and top tree-like pearch. One long toy from top to bottom and another small toy. Should I take out one of the two pearches so it only goes across? The cutest thing...she has this bed tent I bought. At night I will have her in it laying on my chest. After a spell I hang it in her cage and she stays in it until I ask her if she is getting up the next morning, so cute! I take it out during the day. |

Wings need be clipped usually twice a year... however wing clipping is to prevent them from flying out of doors or windows, or rather flying INTO windows and mirrors... also to try and prevent them from flying into open pots of water or oil, or into the toilet. Not only that but to more easily control them... However an unfledged parrot should not be clipped.
Clipping is a controversial subject, and there's a link in my signature which leads to a thread about clipping. It talks about some of the different methods of clipping used. Nail clipping doesn't need to be done on a healthy bird... however its nicer if they have trimmed nails (that are smooth) against our skin... so just the very end can be trimmed off how ever often needed. As for the cage, that's far too small. If your short on money, then save up at least $150 for a flight cage (which is the biggest cage anyone can get for the money, that is both easy to clean, and is great for anything from a few pairs of finches or budgies up to one to two conures) Bird Cages, Playstands, Avian Supplies - HQ CAGES http://www.aecageco.com/Products-Flight_and_Aviary.html Centurion Aviaries & Cage Co. & Century Mutations Or if you saved up a bit more you could go "deluxe" (i.e. food doors and seed catcher) Centurion Aviaries & Cage Co. & Century Mutations Otherwise, for the typical conure cages, your easily looking to spend $200-$300 (if not more) on less space. The cage should be big enough for at least two wooden perches, a rope perch/boing, maybe a swing, 2-4 food dishes, and at least 3 toys without being crowded. A good cage should allow that and then some, and the bird still being able to open their wings and flap them without hitting cage bars or toys. And just a note.... sometimes cage size or even the size of the door can lead to aggression (as strange as that may sound).

Cage Size
Hi,
Just wondered if you had got the Sun Conure website off the ground? Also do you still think 3/4 - 1" bar gap is suitable for Sun Conures - I have been looking at a lot of sites that all talk about 5/8th or 3/4 max - but I wonder if we all start to parrot what we read and that it becomes a truth - i.e. advice given for smaller conures becomes standard for all. I have found a fab cage - and in NZ there are not many good choices but it is 1" or not quite actual gap not counting bar is 2.3cm. But the more research I do the more concerned I get - the trade off if I have to go smaller gap is much/much smaller cage. Love your thoughts. |

Not too bad so far....
One point in what was written: Quote:
If you're making a historical reference to a group or someone specific, it's best to include their names and at least the approximate date of the event.
