I LOVED that book. It's not a how-to on parrot ownership but more of a Scientist observing parrot behavior gone wild (lol) in her home mixed in with her own personal experiences.
So I guess Miss Emma won't be extending any invites to the Amazon's on this board.. ![]() Did you get to the Sofa episode yet??... ![]()

no, no sofa yet**LOL**
Emma does keep me is stiches...she has no idea she is a bird, and just thinks she is the littlest human in the house. I have never seen a bird throw the hissy fits she does, nor be as animated as she is..... She is a girl for sure! Emma will also go after any other bird in the house. Harley, who is nearly 2x's her size is not even safe. Ya cant take your eyes off her for a second. she is the instigater, not knowing if any bird should bite her exposed neck, she is a gonner. So she is the sweetest bird in the house, but also the one to watch..... she is the biggest troublemaker too.

This was the first book I read that really got me into parrots. That said, in retrospect I can find things not quite great about that book, but I do have fond memories of it and recommend it to friends, as well as "Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill." Both books attempt to share the huge impact that parrot relationships have had on the authors, and both are refreshing for venturing into personal and anthropomorphic territory, rather than sticking to the purely scientific/detached and safe way of relating to animals.
The author does have a thing about encouraging the sexual behavior of her male amazon that the typical parrot owner/behaviorist would disagree with...she feels she's an ornithologist studying the intimate behavior of a parrot who has chosen her for his mate rather than a pet owner imposing human standards of behavior on him. Her husband is also an ornithologist and apparently supports her way of interacting with Tiko. Overall, this seems to me to be relatively benign except if Tiko out lives them both and would need to live with anyone else...then his learned behaviors would no longer be acceptable. Liz Wilson has some opinions on this book as well!
